Can anyone explain to me why Montana holds their state competition so early?

I think it's due to a couple factors:

1. They are a relatively small state in terms of # of teams (88 total), but pretty big in terms of geographical area. That means they likely have teams spread out quite a bit, making having regionals or invitational tournaments pretty hard due to the small number or participants and great distances involved. Thus they only really need 1 state tournament each year.
2. According to Wikipedia, snow season is November to March, with most cities getting 30-50 inches per year and the average temperature below freezing during that time. That makes it virtually impossible to hold certain events like bottle rockets, and also probably presents general long-distance travel issues. Hence, having the competition early makes the weather less of a factor and probably helps boost participation.

33 points, wow. Unless they had some events cut out.

20 events (with a few state-specific events). It's pretty good, but not especially unusual for them. They might finish top 35 at Nationals.

New Mexico B:
1. Albuquerque Area Home Schoolers (163) - Qualifies for the 2017 National Tournament)
2. Cottonwood Valley Charter School (204)
3. Houston Middle School (206)
Full Results

New Mexico C:
1. Albuquerque Academy (106) - Qualifies for the 2017 National Tournament

2. Albuquerque Area Home Schoolers (119)
3. Socorro High School (161)
Full Results

Nothing particularly unusual. Albuquerque Academy takes Div C this time (Albuquerque Area Home Schoolers won last year). Cottonwood Valley moves up a place as Sidney Gutierrez falls to 6th. Houston moved up at least a few ranks (possibly as much as five or so, but I'm too lazy to figure out ranks from last year's scores) Everything else is pretty much the same as last year.
