Re: MagLev C

Does anyone know why brushless motors (as in, say, a PC fan) are disallowed? I understand the ban on ICs, but brushless motors work fine without them...or at least that has been my experience in testing PC fans. Brushless motors use internal ICs instead of brushes/commutator to switch the current, ...

Re: Bungee Drop C

The outer cover of commercial bungee cord is made of a non-elastic material that limits how far the cord can stretch. Read the rules carefully to see if this would be allowed. If there is any uncertainty, you may wish to submit a question to soinc.org AND your local tournaments.

Can the extension bar be part of a Fishing rod? Can it be flexible or not? Of course it CAN , but the question is MAY it be used! As noted by Chalker above, ALL extension bars have some degree of flexibility and therefore will store energy. Note: The information below has no bearing on current rule...

As stated above. the Earth's magnetic and geographic poles are close together (as are the South magnetic and geographic poles). The poles of a magnet (or compass) are called "North Seeking" and "South Seeking", or North and South poles for short. Thus the "North" pole o...

Re: Mission Possible Starting Task Question

In the past some event supervisors interpreted this to mean the quarter (may have been a different object back then) must be released above the 60 cm (also a different measurement then) maximum height of the device, regardless of the actual height. Don't ask me how they arrived at this conclusion, I...

If you go to the store and ask for "1/4" washers"- the OD is 3/4". The hole in them - the ID - is actually a bit larger than 1/4" (~5/16") Bolts, nuts, washers, etc. are manufactured to meet various standards. I don't have the actual standards on hand, but you can see ...

Re: Elastic Launched Glider C

The following simple analysis ignores many factors that could influence the outcome, but I suspect it is generally valid: An object in motion continues to move in the same direction unless acted upon by some force. Greater variation from a straight path requires a greater force. A glider also requir...

but the people that did said that they got 7.96 seconds
By whose clock? I don't have a copy of the spreadsheet available, but I'm pretty sure there were no times over 7 seconds.

Re: Helicopter Egg Drop B [Trial]

What would make the egg from a team with a slower/longer flight drop time break as compared to a team with a faster/shorter drop time. Several variables determine whether or not the egg breaks. The first thing that comes to mind is the egg itself. Eggs are not uniform and some have weaker shells or...

Re: Helicopter Egg Drop B [Trial]

Any national times?
First place team was a little under 6 seconds. Only 2 teams got a better time (approx +.1 & +.6 sec) & both of their eggs broke.
