Fermi Questions C

Post by Jim_R »

-The path of the Administrator is beset on all sides by the inequities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men.

-Nothing\'s gonna get deleted. We\'re gonna be like three little Fonzies here. And what\'s Fonzie like? Come on, what\'s Fonzie like?
-Cool?
-Correctamundo. And that\'s what we\'re gonna be. We\'re gonna be cool. Now, I\'m gonna count to three, and when I count three, you let go of your mouse, and back away from the keyboard. But when you do it, you do it cool. Ready? One... two... three.

So does anyone have any idea on how to "study" for this event or prepare for it?

This event is notorious in our school... our team literally memorized questions and their answers from every test they could find. The questions seem to be fairly random, so I suppose your best bet is to learn random facts and practice scientific notation.

Memorizing "constants" or facts about science, the US, the world etc. seem to help. Like the population of states, mass of an electron, you get the idea.
Also, memorize the "magnitude" of the answer, like the population of the state of Washington is about 6.6 million, so memorize that as 10^7. Although, memorizing stuff to two significant digits never hurts.

It's also very beneficial to learn some of the conversions (meters to feet, grams to pounds, parsecs to clicks, BTUs to joules, etc.)

Would anyone be up for a fermi questions marathon? Like the rocks and minerals and forestry marathons going on?

That sounds like a great idea, as long as you explain your thought process.

I'd be up for that. Since the event can be really random, nothing would really help you prepare more than a bunch of practice questions, right?

So does we start one or does a mod?
Either way, I think this should be the first question :P (remember, answers have to be powers of 10)

Not really, a "typical" fermi question, but it requires estimation skills either way.
Also, it may be beneficial to memorize the logs of a few small prime numbers for this problem.
