Should students be required to take a geography class in school?

Should students be required to take a geography class in school at least once during both Middle School and High School?

I am asking this largley due to the fact that in my lifetime I have heard 3 "honors" students 2 in 8th grade one in 9th say something like "Wait...I thought Europe was a country?"
There are probobly more I just havn't heard about them.

Also deeisenberg gave me the idea on chat.
