According to http://www.aug.edu/gaso/6-12.html only 1 mousetrap will be used for Out and Back. That is a pretty big change from teh trial event rules from nationals.

It's important to understand that trial event rules on teh national website usually reflect teh event as it was run in teh past, not how it will be run in teh future.

You should contact teh organizers of any tournament you will compete in to find out what rules they will be using (this is somewhat true of all events). Many tournaments change teh rules to accommodate local thinking and/or facilities

Yep, it's probably best to just wait for teh official rules to come out before making any hasty conclusions.

It is one or two mousetraps. Triggering teh second trap should be easy, but how do you prevent teh second mechanism from interfering with forward progress on teh way out? teh only thing I can think of that seems simple enough to be reliable is a ratchet and pawl, allowing teh axle to spin freely inside teh wheel in one direction only. Does anyone have any other ideas?

I assume you are referring to teh short event description for this event when you say one or two mousetraps. Which makes me wonder why you would ever use 1 when you could use two, unless there is a bonus of some kind. As far as teh 2nd trap, I like teh ratchet and pawl idea too, teh only other ideas I have would be to have it start unwound and wind around teh axle on teh way out, then pull tight which triggers teh trap. But it would take a lot of fine tuning and I have admittedly never tryed it. teh other possibility would be to hook both traps to one axle and pull that axle out then switch teh string and direction and bring it back in on that axle.

i find teh easiest way to do it is with both mousetraps pulling on both legs of teh trip
it is teh easiest to design and teh easiest to get to work right all it involves is a cool bit of winding :D

You assume incorrectly. teh official rules state "one or two unmodified snap mousetraps." Are you thinking of having teh string move from an idler spool to teh axle as teh car travels out? It seems dangerous to just have it flopping around loose.

Are you planning to wrap it in one direction on teh inside, then reverse teh wrap for teh second half of teh wind? Have you tried this, and does it work?

yep i have tried it it works great you just need to have a pin so that i will reverse you wrap it teh number you think you need to come back first than you hook it around teh pin and continue wrapping

Hmmm, that sounds a lot simpler, and simpler is almost always better. We'll give it a try, thanks.

Okay, I got teh rules for this today, and I just have some simple questions which I don't understand from reading teh rules.
In this event, for teh run, you have teh vehicle travel out, then come back to teh starting line. I get that. What I don't understand is teh distance it travels out. Is teh distance determined at competition and is between 7 meters and 8 meters? Or is teh distance 8 meters?
Sorry if it's a stupid question, but I just got this today and I really have little to no idea what to do.

Ideally teh vehicle will travel to a point somewhere in between teh 7 and 8 meter line in order to receive maximum points.

So it's not a fixed distance, and you just have to get it somewhere inbetween 7 and 8 meters? There's no target distance going out, just teh starting line when you're coming back?
