Universal Transverse Mercator. Like profiling, it can only be used at states and nationals. I'm not really sure what kind of questions they'll ask about it, but I also don't know too much about it.

What's in the coaches manual? The best (most accurate) way to do it is by using fractions. Measure the distance (x) from one 2.5' (150") tick mark to another, then measure the distance (y) from the closest tick mark to your point. Now you know your point is 150" *y/x from the tick mark. Do the addition and you're set. It shouldn't take more than 1-2 minutes to get both coordinates if you practice it.

Go to the soinc.org store, and buy the Coach's Manual for Road Scholar. It has everything that you need for the event in one book, so it's easy to bring into the competition, and, it has lots of practice questions that you can take before you take a test. I recommend ordering the book, taking all the lessons, and then taking a practice test.

It really is a great book if you have the attention span to read it. (I didn't )

I finnaly got my copy of the rules. Lets see whats new,
I don't think I remember seeing a UTM last year. At least that is state and nats only. I don't exactly understand what it is about though. And their is now PLSS on the student created maps. Exactly how will it be used?

I don't think that there will be any difference with map drawing. In the past, questions have told me to draw a pond in the NE 1/4 // SE 1/4 // 14 for example, so I don't even see how PLSS will be an addition. They probably have just neglected to put it on there in the past.

thats the way i could see it added to a test
