Post by mcfinnigan »

This is my first year in towers and i really like it. The problem is that my tower weighs 20 grams and i need to cut the weight in half. Does anyone half any good designs and if you don`t want to give them up, :( , do you have any tips?

It is hard to help if you don't have pics and other info about it. (wood sizes, densities, glue, type of wood, ect)

we used 3/16 main support peices and 1/8 cross section peices. It weighed total 20.62 grams. I know not use as much glue but i need a better design for towers. If you have any tips i would be very greatful. I also used balsa and use stamdard CA glue.

Just to clarify, you used 3/16x3/16 and 1/8x1/8?

If you build a tower out of balsa wood and let if sit out side in the sun on a low humid day it will lose weight. :)

You can reduce weight by sticking it in the oven for a little while on a low temperature. This will decrease the mass by about 5%. Don't leave it in too long though, or it will burn.

11.1 as a score
isnt bad, but can be alot better
i would suggest trying to hold the 15kg, as the numerator would then be 225, as compared to your 144, could help ALOT

you really dont need to use 1/8by1/8 for the cross section pieces. they would do better as main support instead. for the cross section pieces, 1/16 suffices. Also, i wouldnt suggest spending time to experiment with baking because i have heard that the tower regains the lost weight within 20-30 min and it doesnt even reduce weight by a significant amount.
