I see what you mean, but it's kind of unavoidable for any competition that's set up the way SciO is. The teams that go to Nationals a given year get more practice, so they do better the next year, so they go to Nationals again, so they do even better the next year... and so on. It might be unfortunate, but it's certainly not unfair. Any team, with sufficient preparation, could go to and win Nationals.

Yeah, in virtually every competition you end up with just a few teams that usually win.

However, it's not impossible for a fairly new team to do well at Science Olympiad. Just look at how good LASA has become in the last few years.

Yeah, well I hope that Oregon Trail takes first place in all those events too.

Too bad we aren't going. ;)

I know how you feel. We missed third at nationals by very little last year.

Since we got 11th, that's an unbelievably pretentious thing to say. There were 43 points between 2nd and 11th, but that doesn't really mean we "missed third at Nationals by very little." All it means was the scores were close.

[BTW, I can talk to him like that because he was on my team.]

Yeah, and it didn't feel very good knowing how many things had gone wrong.
