Massachusetts is a state participating in Science Olympiad in the Northeast United States. The Science Olympiad program in the state is known as Massachusetts State Science Olympiad and the organization has existed since at least 2001. The state is somewhat competitive, having around 100 teams in both divisions per year. Multiple invitationals have been run throughout the state's history, although no regionals take place in the state, with all teams automatically advancing to the state tournament, where one team will typically advance to the national tournament.

Historically, the MIT Invitational and Harvard Invitational have been the main invitationals hosted in the state, both of which have attracted teams throughout the nation to the Cambridge area. Other invitationals hosted in the state include the Lexington Invitational started in the 2021 season, the new UMASO Invitational in the 2023 season, and the defunct Coolidge Invitational and Oak Invitational.

The state tournament has typically been won by A.W. Coolidge Middle School in Division B, with the school claiming the championship over 25 times since 1993. Before the 2000s, Coolidge Middle School would often place in the top 10 at Nationals, although in recent years it has not placed as high. However, in the past 3 years Jonas Clarke Middle School has claimed the title. In Division C, Acton-Boxborough Regional High School is the typical champion in recent years, although Newton North High School and Lexington High School were also frequent champions before the 2010s. Acton-Boxborough has done well at the national tournament, often placing near the top 10.

History

Past State Champions

Massachusetts has historically been controlled by A.W. Coolidge Middle School in Division B. The only team to have defeated Coolidge at state from 1993 - 2018 is Ephraim Curtis Middle School in 2005. However, starting in 2019 William Diamond Middle School has been the Division B champion. In Division C, Acton-Boxborough Regional High School has won every year since 2010 except for 2017, when Newton South High School won because Acton-Boxborough got disqualified. The early years of Division C saw Acton-Boxborough, Concord-Carlisle High School, Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, and Lexington High School all winning multiple times.
