Re: Wind Power B/C

I ran Wind Power C at an invitational last weekend. The test did not comply with the 5 questions from each of the 5 categories spec in the rules, and I didn't have enough time or the inclination to make it comply. It did have 25 questions, however. So, teams should be prepared for tests that don't c...

Re: Wind Power B/C

Should we focus our blade assembly, to do better at the high power or the low power of the fan? We test our designs at both fan speeds, since both will be used during competitions. We 're finding that some designs work well at high speed, but don't even turn at low speed (getting a full CD to turn ...

Re: Robot Arm C

Can anyone point to me where to find the allowed frequencies in soinc.org? The key question is whether the ranges are the same as in the past or not.

Re: Bridge Building 2016

Be careful if you are making the side opposite of the 5cm test support elevated. The other side CANNOT be over 2cm within the bearing zone. I think that rule was specifically made so that teams could not, or would have a lot of trouble making one side of their bridge elevated. We came off the surfa...

Re: Bridge Building 2016

My advice is to NOT have the loading block at an angle (horizontal only). Our team will be pursuing designs that look like an elevated bridge (from several seasons ago) on the left end and a flat bridge like last season on the right end. The 5 cm test support may prove to be very interesting to in a...

Re: Designs

I'm wondering about the first bonus ETS. The rules state that each must be initiated by a golf ball moving into a scoring jug. This is clear enough, although it appears that the golf ball that starts the device in motion cannot be used to start the first ETS, unless it somehow makes it to below all ...

Re: Scores B/C

With this particular set of rules, I guess that B division bridges can and will get to under 5 grams and will go to full load, and C division bridges can and will get to under 6 grams and will go to full load. So, above 3000 for B and above 2500 for C by the efficiency score. I would not be surprise...

Re: Scrambler C

Really? There's absolutely no need to try and point out hoe you think other people have misread the rules, it can come across as insulting. And for the record, yes, a large number of ramps were second tierd, and those that weren't (mainly those that had the egg at the starting line, I believe) were...

Re: Scrambler C

I bet that for those that used a ramp at the Texas invite that the judge missed where the top of the dowel was. For those of you that think a ramp won't get you put in a lower tier, why take the chance at your regional or state competition? If the tip of the egg is at the start line with nothing ove...

Re: Scrambler C

Another point came to mind about ramps. Where will top of the 1/4" diameter stick be when the car is on the ramp with the tip of the egg at the start line? Most likely over the start line. We considered ramps for just a couple minutes before deciding against them.
