Re: how to choose the competition team?

Has anyone ever had to deal with the 7 seniors rule? Because we have 10 currently that have all been participating for the last few years and how would you choose who participates in varsity and who doesn't? One option would be to do it by skill, but since everyone has different events, that's not ...

Re: Iolani Invitational

The forensics test was badly written. Some of the questions were merely worded in a confusing manner, which would have been cleared up by a proctor if the test had been given in regular competition. Some questions were, however, impossibly mangled. Case in point: the DNA fingerprinting portion of th...

Re: Science Olympiad 2012

@Luo: I agree with your point about the exclusion of alternates and assistant coaches. My team brought 31 students to nationals, with 4 coaches. We do not attend the banquet or the ice cream social, so we were not aware of the amenities exclusions, however our seating arrangements at opening ceremon...

Re: Protein Modeling C

If XIAP is a competitve inhibitor then what residues are important to the active site it blocks? and what are the other residues other than cys 285 that are involved in the series of active sites? That's your job to find out! If you have a specific question (such as the cys 285/ ala 285 confusion) ...

Re: Protein Modeling C

Just a thought, must creative additions be attached to the model? At some competitions last year, teams came with text on their models giving more information than their notecards stated. At one competition, a team came with a tri-fold board covered in diagrams and text.

Re: Protein Modeling C

I know of 5 residues that bind to DNA, but I'm having trouble understanding a previous comment, that amino acids only interact with the sugar-phosphate backbone. If this were the case, how would transcription factors recognize DNA correctly? It appears, in jmol, that the residues bind to the base pa...

Re: Protein Modeling C

A question for kwijiborjt: Since you picked out five of the bases that were involved with binding (i think there may have been one or two more if you look in jmol) On the jmol for the prebuild, 10 DNA bases are shown. Are you talking about file 2wbu or 2wbs? 2wbs shows only 7 bases, and a slightly d...

Re: Protein Modeling C

I have a question, although i'm not from New York and will not be at the competition, but I guess this applies to all state competitions. Is the exam portion of the event written by MSOE? It seems that all tests were written by them at invitationals/regionals, and I was wondering if the exams are th...

Re: Protein Modeling C

My model is all supported by 22-gauge jewelry wire At an invitational my school went to, one of our teams was docked points because our protein was held up by wood stakes (attached to the Styrofoam base) and the judges told us that they must be able to pick up the protein and move it around. Is sus...
