Re: Top 3 teams from State for National Bids?

As this year, most of the competitions are held online, logistically it is easy to increase the number of qualifiers if the software is able to handle the scale. Just wanted to point out this is NOT necessarily a correct assumption. There are many factors that come into play and while the competiti...

Season Planning & Ways to Play Survey PART 2

In case you didn't notice the header, we are running a 'Season Planning and Ways to Play Survey' AGAIN. Last time we had over 2000 responses. We encourage you to fill it out again even if you did before as we are looking at how opinions are potentially changing.

Re: 2020-2021 Tournaments!

Soinc posted a related survey a few days ago; due date is Friday, July 17th. Just wanted to really encourage everyone to consider filling this survey out (which is also linked to in the header on this website). Here's the description of it: Hello Science Olympiad Nation! Now that we've announced ne...

Re: Replaying Events for 2021

One general policy many of you might not be aware of is that, in general, every year we keep ~50% of the events the same, make minor changes to ~25% of them, and major changes/replacements to ~25% of them. This policy has been in place for almost the entirety of SO for the purposes of ensuring there...

Re: Replaying Events for 2021

One other comment I forgot to make: we have to think about the 90+% of competitors / teams that don't make it past regionals, not just the 120 teams that make it to Nationals (although we take those into consideration too). Those of you here on SciOly are in the top 1% of SO competitors in terms of ...

Re: Replaying Events for 2021

As I indicated before, the Rules Chairs had some extensive discussions over the past few days regarding the Replaying Events ideas. There are many very good arguments both for and against the idea, and hence there isn't any particular solution that would make everyone happy. Many of the points discu...

SOPomo wrote: March 11th, 2020, 3:50 pm What do you think will happen to the Summer Institute, if rules are being kept the same?
Nothing official yet, but I believe that it will be held as usual. A significant number of attendees are new / first year coaches each year, so they would still benefit from it.

Re: 2020-2021 Events

Since there are multiple threads on this, cross-posting what I've said elsewhere: The Rules Chairs have not made ANY decision nor had any discussions about how to handle rotations for the 21-22 season and beyond. Our focus the past few days has been on thinking through any issues / implications of r...

Re: Covid-19 and Nats/States

I would clarify that it's not 100% certain that future rotations won't be affected by this change (especially those beyond the next few years). I could see some committees pushing to return certain events on the original timeline on the basis of it having been a while since they were in rotation. T...

Re: Ohio 2020

I apologize for my comment, which sounded more critical and insensitive than I intended. The point that I was originally trying to convey was that this appeared to be an early overreaction, although I now understand that this is not the case. No problem at all. To help put this in a bit more perspe...
