Re: Pennsylvania 2021

As much as I dislike the idea of reducing the number of regional tournaments to this extent, I am massively in favor of these changes made to the state tournament. Having a two-level tournament is a tremendous idea, and it is my position that all states should strive to have some form of multi-level...

Re: Pennsylvania 2021

For comparison, the largest B regional in a typical year was Southeast. In 2019 and 2020, they had 23 teams. This year, the regionals are 27 and 25 teams, respectively. How does this make any sense in a year like this? Typically I am in pretty solid lockstep with PASO, but I could not disagree more...

Re: Pennsylvania 2021

I have heard a bit about PA combining regionals this year. By the sounds of it, all regionals are held on the same day and use the same materials, so I frankly don't understand why this decision is necessary. It's not like you need a minimum amount of teams to make using a facility worth it. I can u...

Re: Musings on Test Length

I guess it's technically a choice to break the 3/4 tie and not break the 15/16 one. I just think it's a really bad one. But unless events are going to have spare medals on hand (so you can award 2nd place to 2 teams) you have to break the tie If you simplify down to this, you get my position. In my...

Re: Musings on Test Length

I would agree. You can't treat medalists as if they're inherently different, because at the end of the day the difference between 3rd and 4th is the same as the difference between 15th and 16th when it comes to total team scores. If you break a tie between 3rd and 4th, but you don't do the same for...

Re: Musings on Test Length

1. I signed on to search for thoughts on the (troubling) fact that events seem entirely "open note" this season. What's the point in building a binder or cheat sheet when teams are going to have phones, tablets, or other computers available for looking up answers, a substantial fraction o...

Re: Musings on Test Length

It feels to me that the rhetoric in these posts about long tests not being dependent on speed are being focused pretty much entirely on higher-level teams that won't be intimidated by an extremely long test that they won't finish, and are also not making any distinction between writing for invitati...

Re: Pennsylvania 2021

But providing competition opportunities for small and low-income schools certainly should be one of NSO's top priorities right now. (And forget about nationals. Small teams and low-income schools aren't looking at going to nats - they can't afford it, even if they'd qualify. Multiple divisions at s...
