Re: Pennsylvania 2024

Reposting from the Discord. I have been pretty out of the loop for the last couple years, but it's great to see the registration numbers of teams within Philadelphia. Before the urban initiative it felt like we were lucky if there were 1-2 teams from inside the city, but now based on Scilympiad I co...

Re: Pennsylvania 2022

Also, it's fantastic to see that PASO is expanding the Urban Initiative to Pittsburgh. I wish all the best for that program's success. https://pascioly.org/urban

Re: Pennsylvania 2022

I am amused that the location for Southeast North is south of the location for Southeast South.

Re: Your Daily Random Comment

i babysit a ton of kids in gen alpha and apparently counting to 3 doesn't work on them. "I'm going to count to 3! 1, 2-" "What happens when you get to 3, hUh?" "Uh- You get, um, TIME-OUT" "Time out doesn't really do anything, all we do is sit down." "uH&...

Re: Team Registration Numbers Discussion

It's probably going to be up to the individual state and regional directors to reach out to schools once in-person tournaments are starting up again. Nearby schools may also be able to help with this, but I'm not sure how effective it would be. I would like to see some sort of organized recruitment ...

Re: 9th Graders in Division B

That's a straw man argument -- never had that mentality. By focusing on the norms for a particular region/state, I think I'm talking about a narrower set of circumstances than you: for example, when nearly all schools top out at 8th grade and one of the schools brings down 9th graders from the high...

Re: 9th Graders in Division B

I don't know how to solve the problem, but I do not think it's right for schools with no 9th-graders to get a competitive advantage against other middle schools in the same situation by pulling 9th-graders down from high school. I think this is an important crux to this discussion. What somehow mak...

Re: 9th Graders in Division B

However, I believe that 9th graders that attend their highschool with 10th, 11th, and 12th graders should compete with their school (Division C). It just doesn't feel ethical. That's a fair opinion to have. Unfortunately, it isn't really feasible for NSO to legislate it out officially, because then...

Re: 9th Graders in Division B

Most junior high schools top out at 9th grade. Not to be contrary, but according to InsideSchools, "Most middle schools serve children in grades 6 to 8, but a few start in 5th or 7th grade." Or we could go to the bible of valid internet reliability (Wikipedia) that says, "Most middle...
