Re: Binders and Notesheets

I'm hijacking this topic because the title is ambiguous: how do you prune (let's say) hefty binders? Physics events don't need much volume, but taxonomy events do, and some supervisors pull obscure factoids that run beyond homemade materials and published ones such that you often have to draw from s...

Re: Illinois 2019

Looking at Div C, I am somewhat surprised to see Whitney Young and Walter Payton placed in single A. In that light, I think the top 4 teams for single A at State will be Whitney Young, Walter Payton, Warren Township, and Huntley, possibly in that order. After realizing that AA has 25 teams (I previ...

Re: Illinois 2019

Hamilton is one of several out-of-state teams that regularly travel here to find greater competition. You can find their Regional results publicly on Avogadro.

Re: Illinois 2019

The thing is that some of the regionals tests that we took were definitely not up to the par than at the state level, so the overly dominant results seen at some of the regionals may still be unrepresentative of how state will turn out. This is accurate. Our state is moving rapidly towards standard...

Re: Illinois 2019

Do we actually see that much fluctuation in rankings from December through April? I'm not suggesting that teams don't improve over time, but there aren't generally major ranking shake-ups during the height of the season. I've only personally seen an interesting case like this once (and this was many...

Re: Illinois 2019

You're underestimating Hinsdale. I did that last season, and it threw my predictions a bit. Go back and look at the Conant results again. They beat you by a more than 100pt margin ;)

Re: Your Daily Random Comment

It's the middle of March, making this officially (I think) my latest check-in for any season ever. This post had no other purpose. :D

Re: Illinois 2019

Those CLC results mask the fact that Stevenson Junior Varsity defeated the other schools' Varsity teams; it's really quite impressive. 8-) It would take a twenty or thirty point misstep in two events similar to WIDI for them to fall out of the top two. It could happen, but they have no consistently ...

Re: Missouri 2018

Not everyone was given thermometers. I don't see why they couldn't have just graded the test portion and not the build? Throwing out events is very uncommon for Missouri states, when there are constantly poor events run without throwing them out (see: Hydrogeology 2017 when I won the event because ...

Re: How to fix olympiads biggest problem. (Or at least my biggest problem)

This is just my opinion, but nobody should be getting "A" grades on standard Science Olympiad events. If they are, either they were super over-prepared (unlikely for C but possible for B, I guess) or the event didn't challenge them to think critically or tackle new problems using old information. I'...

Re: Hardest Science Olympiad Event, in your opinion?

Someone should make a spreadsheet for calculating what is the most random event in terms of standard deviation of events at 2017 nationals for B and C and rank them in order of how much they deviate from the team's total score. Someone did an analysis along these lines semirecently. Search for some...

Re: Illinois 2018

Re: trials, I was griping a few weeks back about Ornith not being one (according to recent trends). Did anybody pay attention to trial event participation this season? Like, did folks actually, seriously make electric airplanes and detectors? They seemed to have a high barrier to entry for...
