Re: New York 2013
(full disclosure: I'm a GNS alum) Speaking of movement in the top 10, GNS finally broke in last year with a new coach after our little DQ debacle the year before. Yes, a bunch of people graduated, but quite frankly I found last year's sophomores terrifying. I think they'll at least repeat top 7, if ...

Re: Astronomy C
I've been using Astronomy Today (Chaisson & McMillan) and have been pretty happy with it. I know a few other people who use it too for scioly/nat'l science bowl.

Re: New York 2011
Since everyone can't be happy, they should make everyone miserable and host it in Pennsylvania. Actually, it would probably be more convenient for many teams to go to PA. Think they'd mind if we crashed their state tournament? My team should've done that last year... The DQ looks even sadder on the ...

Re: New York 2011
Any astronomers on here? I'm curious as to whether this year's test was as all over the place as last year's. Perhaps it was just me, but I found it a little arbitrary and unrelated to the specs sheet. There was barely any DSO identification/galaxy-specific material. Also, anyone from ward melville...

Re: New York 2011
One of hte odd things is that the contested placements for both spackenkill and syosset were both "33." I don't know how they do the scoring-- if they use an excel spreadsheet, or what-- but that seems like a peculiar coincidence. if anything, it makes it more likely that there was a mess-...

Re: New York 2011
Just out of curiosity, how did you folks hear we'd been dq'ed? our middle school team is still going though (for the first time in 7 years!) so we'll be living vicariously through them and helping them prepare a LOT. any division B'ers on this forum, beware! they will be a force to be reckoned with!...

Re: New York 2011
We (the students) found out about the disqualification on last Friday. Our advisors found out earlier, but they tried to fix it before making us worry. I think it's ridiculous too (& I'm sure most of my teammates would agree). We appealed the decision at every level that we could, but the board ...

Re: Astronomy C
I think this year's regional test (western long island, ny) was pretty good, it was a good length (actually, last year i didn't finish the last two physics questions) and covered a good range of material. I would've liked to see more stuff on galaxies, especially AGNs, but, alas! at least there was ...
