Re: Texas 2014

Hey everyone, First of all congrats to Beckendorff on the huge win!!! Good Job! Ok, I'm not sure if you remember me but I was competing in Science Olympiad last year for West Briar. I transferred to another school this year and they are going to for a scioly team for next year. My science teacher w...

Re: Materials Science C

This event is ridiculous. I had heard rumors but had not looked at the rules until the opportunity to supervise it fell into my lap. I can imagine folks nationwide are...apprehensive about this one, to say the least. And that's ignoring the students who have to prepare for it. At a tournament of, s...

Re: Chemicals

Where can we buy chemicals(salts/powders) for testing? What salts are usually used? Any help is appreciated. Thanks. They can give you any powder really. Sometimes, they could give NaCl but usually they just give some copper containing compound because the color isn't white. You can practice with a...

Re: Materials Science C

Actually, it was quantitative. They gave you a protractor as well as a magnifying glass. After dropping all the drops, what you were supposed to do is magnify them and then use a protractor to estimate. You could get pretty close too because the magnifying glass was pretty decent. Alternatively, to...

Re: Materials Science C

WA had a lab on contact angles. We got four different surfaces, and had to compare the contact angle between them, draw the drop etc. We also had to model one of the crystal structures (each team got a different one). In your lab, did you have to quantitatively measure the contact angles or just co...

Re: Disease Detectives B/C

I did WTC. I felt pretty confident in my answers, though it did take a lot longer than I would have liked so we didn't get the chance to review each other's sections. Yeah we didn't get to review each other's answers either. It was weird though because I think we got 1 hour to work on the test inst...

Re: Disease Detectives B/C

I have a question, did anyone else at nationals think that the numbers to calculate the odds ratio/ relative risk were really difficult to find on the disease detectives test? My partner and I could find almost no data for the 2x2 tables. I can only speak for the half of the div C test that ...
