Re: Rubber Powered Airplane - SO trial event

Hi All, We appear to have touched a nerve. The central issue here is one which pops up from time to time, and that is the intersection between Science Olympiad and competitive free flight modeling. Many of our best mentors, supervisors and tournament volunteers come from the free flight community an...

Re: Dime bonus

For what it's worth, we generally try to make doing the bonus slightly more rewarding than damaging to the final score. With a relatively slim margin, the hope is to provide teams that have already mastered the basics of flying with some sort of additional challenge while not giving them an easy way...

Re: 2016 rules

Hopefully those in charge will write the 2016 WS rules to encourage and reward experimentation in airplane design. It's discouraging to see virtually every team fly the same airplane at each WS competition year after year. Trust me, we are aware of the issue and definitely want to fix it. The probl...

Re: 2016 rules

Get crazy with your ideas. I like this conversation and am always interested in how far we can push things. One item to consider is that we write rules for the whole country, with a particular focus on the teams who have never participated before. You all are suggesting interesting ideas, but they s...

Re: Designs

chalker, I have combed the rules over and over again, and have not found anything to either support or deny the possibility of having all golf balls moving towards the scoring jug at the same time but released one at a time ex. belt moves > ets > belt moves > ets, etc (as in the conveyor belt I men...

Re: Designs

This is a little off topic, but to clarify, there are a very large number of people in charge of the rules. Each event has one or two event supervisors who are in charge at nationals. These are the people who generally write the first drafts of the rules. Similar events are grouped together on commi...

Re: Science Olympiad 2014-2015 Events

Science Olympiad does not officially categorize events as Test/Lab/Build, those are unofficial designations generated by competitors and teams. Instead, the events are broken down by topic. Specifically Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Life Sciences, Earth Science, Inquiry/Nature of Science and Technolog...

Re: Helicopters B

This point from Jeff is extremely important and is something that hasn't been brought up before. In AMA helicopters, I have seen a handful of record flights, some exceeding 10 minutes. Most of those helicopter flights had extremely well balanced thrust-weight profiles. In general, they climbed very ...

Re: Helicopters B

I don't know if anyone has figured that out completely yet. The idea behind the bonus is to give an extra challenge/task to teams that feel they have maximized the performance from dual-bladed rotors and have the time to build/practice with single-bladed rotor. If you think you are in that boat, I'd...

Re: OSU Helicopters (Petition Against Field House)

Because it is sometimes really hard to determine when one is "stuck" vs. "flying." Moreover, there is often disagreement between the timers, competitors and spectators as to when the clock should stop which results in controversy (like what you see on this forum.)
