Re: 2011 San Diego Regionals DIV B

A very competitive event: 64 entries, the top 5 scores were: 42.4, 37.7, 37.6, 37.5, and 35.7 Those are great scores! What event was it? I had a typo. The scores are from the San Diego Regional, which was held last Saturday for DIV B. The SD regional is one of the largest in the country, as I under...

Towers/ bridges interpretation of the rules

Hello all, I would like to ask those who have experience in this event. Would guyed towers count as self-standing? This is providing that the "cables" made out of tape or string are tied to counterweights and not directly to the test base.

For 1/8 square legs, we are using 3 levels of |V| chevron braces - J
- this is for the DIC C tower like yours (I appear as DIV B, here, but I am also helping the High School who are doing the DIV C)

Re: Designs

If I have a good, competitive tower, I would not read into the ambiguity of the rules and leave all my work to the subjectivity of the judgment of the event coordinator... you may be disappointed after all your hard work...

Re: Junkyard Challenge B

And I quote from the soinc FAQs 01/11/2011 - 15:14 Will students be allowed to stand on a chair or on a team mate's back or shoulders to place a ball on top of their tower, so that the team's tower is not limited by the height of the student? No, for safety reasons, students may not stand on a chai...

Re: Transportation

I read you live in GA, and the relative humidity outdoor there is high, in a building it will be considerably less... Balsa wood is exposed long enough will absorb water to be in equilbrium with the surrounding environment. I would check in a pharmacy , wallmart or other similar shops if the sell si...

Re: Transportation

If your tower is weight critical, that is very light, say less than 6 grams, moisture could increase its weight because balsa is highly hygroscopic Dissecant bags absorb this moisture before balsa can absorb it itself. If your tower is over 7 grams, I would not worry too much, unless you live in a s...
