Re: Balancing Difficulty and Accessibility in Test Writing
Also, approaching scioly as "measuring thinking , looking to past/college/professors for ideas, etc" is not always useful (I get what you mean in context Fishman, but this seems to not be such an uncommon thought). "Non-test" skills are tough to translate into tests, and what yo...

Re: Balancing Difficulty and Accessibility in Test Writing
Little late to the party, but I wrote the VA Dynamic Planet regs/states test this past year and saw a pretty even spread at states. To put some numbers behind it, the mean=59/115 with the high=87/115, low=23/115, stdev=18, and 3/24 teams within 1 point of each other. I would've liked to see a higher...

2017 Virginia Tech Invitational
Hi folks! Virginia Tech is proud to host a Division C invitational on Saturday, December 2nd. We will be running all National events except for Game On and Code Analysis (VA only event). This is run almost exclusively by students; most of the tests are written by students and we will have volunteers...

Re: Scores?
Heard from the guy who did EV on my team (Langley HS) that he got:
1.93s
3.9cm
= 23.2 overall
7th place

Re: Ohio 2016
I'm a little late to the conversation, but when I was a freshman I decided to test my Gravity Vehicle the night before Regionals in the room where the event was held (albeit in a completely different area from where the track was set up). We ran into some tournament officials who were setting up as ...

Re: Scrambler B
Help on the release: I'm using a pulley launcher and the lower pulley is parallel to the car, but how do I get the string/rope to easily release? I'm using nylon cord and eyehooks btw and I have several feet of dowel I feel like using For us we had a screw protruding a few millimeters upwards from ...

Re: Scrambler B
For the 2014 season my partner and I constructed a PVC car; it's easy to (dis)assemble and essentially guaranteed to go straight. It's substantially heavier than a balsa car but it can still hit a mid-2 second time (or lower, depending on the type of launcher) if built properly. And you won't have ...

Re: Scrambler B
Thanks both bernard and fishman100 for the thorough descriptions and tips. I modified my launcher by slightly altering the locking mechanism and elastic I used, and now it works, but I'm getting around 1.9 seconds from 0.5-8.5 meters. I guess this is decent but clearly you guys have gotten better t...

Re: Scrambler B
Okay, cool. I asked my coach to submit a FAQ as well. Sorry for having so many questions, but after repeatedly analyzing the spring launcher diagram on the wiki (http://scioly.org/wiki/images/5/5c/SC-springtypediag.gif) I still don't understand how to construct the locking mechanisms. My thought is...
