Re: Yale University (YUSO) Invitational 2014

I'm so excited! In CT, there are only 2 teams really competing for first. My school went to an invitational last year that was a joke. I'm glad to have some more competition this year before we face off at States.

Re: Bungee Drop C

I have never done a build event, and neither has my partner. This seems mostly like trial and error, though. Any tips?

Re: Entomology B/C

I did Fossils for one year and that was an epic fail. How should I go about studying and learning the bugs? What sort of information will I have to know about them besides distinguishing characteristics and identification?

Re: Water Quality B/C

My state test had a lot on estuaries, and even had us identifying invasive estuarine species like crabs and fish. I don't think this was supposed to be on there, but we just took our best guesses, and that's what everyone else probably did, too.

Re: Water Quality B/C

Last year we used the one that was on the PowerPoint, and it worked great for us. We had to estimate the numbers, but we placed 3rd at States.

Re: Science Olympiad 2012

Will Water Quality still be on freshwater next year, or will it switch to estuaries? I understand that it will rotate between these two and oceanography, but does it switch every year or every two years?

Re: Water Quality B/C

Does anyone think that proctors are scared to make a solution below 3% or above 8%? I've never encountered any higher.
At my competition, we had solutions of 10%, 5%, and 1.5%. They were at least around there, because I don't know if we got them right.

Re: Water Quality B/C

about 30% macroinvertebrates, 30% questions relating to ecology, and 35% questions relating to the water quality factors. I think the salinometer test makes up no more than 5% of the score? "The points for this testing should be approximately 5% of the total score (e.g., if a team recorded between ...

Re: Experimental Design B/C

What are some of the types of errors that are usually listed under Possible Experimental Errors? I have Random error (imprecise instruments), Mess-up error (faulty procedure), and Systematic error (faulty equipment). Is there any other type of error that usually occurs? Ummm...do we actually have t...

Re: Water Quality B/C

For all of the tests I've seen, the part about macro-organisms have all been matching, with nothing on their reproduction, diet, and other things about them listed on the rules. I had some feeding questions, but you're right, matching really is the biggest thing. I have only had pictures that we ha...
