Re: Water Quality B/C

I think it's going to be by saturation. And for the clay hydrometer, I'm assuming that your comparing the specific gravities between the water and air? (If there's nothing in the straw) At the Science Olympiad Summer Institute it was done by weight, however, the rules do not specify which method to...

Re: Water Quality B/C

About how much water do you think they will give us for each sample? (in other words, how big can the salinometers be?) I'm sure that water-quality-testing professionals can measure salinity from only a few drops of water, but I'm assuming we won't have to do that. Still, the salinometer will have t...

Re: Water Quality B/C

How is everyone doing on building their salinometer? On the rules, they specified testing certain salinity percentages of up to 10% - how specific do they want us to measure it? To 1%? To .1%?
Since it doesn't say in the rules, you might want to get an official clarification

Re: Gravity Vehicle C

Actually, this was the year you went to Greece, and I think we used normal string (which could still fall under your hypothesis)? It's funny that we're talking about MTV on Gravity Vehicle forum... Oh yes, I know! I think we both had the same problem...maybe it's a MV thing? :P And, in the interest...

Re: Gravity Vehicle C

Regarding mousetraps going shorter than tested at competitions (   =my feelings regarding this phenomenon )... We came to the conclusion that it was due to our string (dental floss) stretching during repeated testing, then shrinking down again overnight. (of course, this is just a...

Re: Forestry B/C

We will only have to identify based on leaves, right?
(that's the impression I got from reading the rules, but I just wanted to confirm)

Re: Gravity Vehicle C

I used to work on crew for the theatre at my school, and we used a very bendy type of plywood for building curved surfaces. I don't know what it's technically called, but it exists.

Re: Ecology B/C

i wish that they weren't replacing ecology with water dynamics, and i also find it kinda unneccesary, since its pretty much included in ecology already, and ecology is kind of a more broader view on everything, and water, well, you just do water. it's kind of like CJAP, but you study water, not pow...

Re: Preliminary:Forestry

The usual thing describing allowed notes is "in any form from any source", so if they keep saying that then leaves would be allowed. But honestly, I can't see physical leaves as being that helpful. A picture of a leaf could have just as much detail, and it wouldn't get brown and crunchy and then sta...

Studying for science olympiad is a million times more fun than studying for finals.
