Well here we go again- another season of regionals coming beginning in PA starting with SE (as usual...) With that in mind, here is some advice from an old guy: 1) Reread the rules for your events. Do the day before you compete. Make sure you know them and don't mess them up when you compete- no sup...

Re: Meteorology B

Note sheet configurations often depend on personal preference. I preferred to avoid having my text smaller than size 6 (7 if possible), just because I felt that past that point, I was spending too much energy trying to locate/see information. Often this meant deleting pieces of information I didn't...

Re: Pennsylvania 2017

Second, There is no evidence of a true improvement at regionals for Eagle View. Their invitational performance is good but not enough to overtake the experience of Bala Cywnyd, Shady Side, Springhouse, and Strath Haven. 2016: 1st place, 109 points 2017: 1st place, 65 points, with the addition of a ...

Re: Astronomy C

So why is it that sun-like stars form a degenerate helium and core but significantly higher-mass stars don't? (or is the helium flash unrelated to this?) It all has to do with mass. Smaller stars are not large enough to generate the pressure required to initiate helium fusion once the hydrogen is e...

When I competed I would typically dedicate one note sheet just to DSO images. Wikipedia is a good place to start but also dig through NASA databases, and telescope sites (Chandra, etc.).

Re: Astronomy C

I've also heard that the values were different and unrelated (though I tend to stick with 1.4 for most tests since that's what usually gets the points). I wonder if the rotation of the object has anything to do with it? When a star is rotating rapidly, its centrifugal pseudo-force would have an eff...

Re: Pennsylvania 2017

Keep an eye on Strath Haven (C) for States though, they often make a big charge for that tournament. In 2016 they went from 6th-171 (Regionals) to 4th-173 (States). Correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure 9th place doesn't qualify for state in SE C this year (or most years really). My bad, I ha...

Re: Science Olympiad Stories

A few years ago (2010-2011) we were at the regional awards ceremony. They were calling the placing for meteorology, and me and my partner got 4th. We were happy, but some of the other team members were rather surprised, as my partner had won the event at nationals the year before (it was my first ye...

Re: Geologic Mapping C

Sorry, I meant the PA States test! It's somewhat odd to say but I'm glad other people found the test as weird as we did... I thought that the PA state test was fine. It was definitely somewhat heavy on concepts, and lacked problem solving (No Steronet, 3 point, etc.) However, I did like the interpr...
