Just a suggestion, but instead of pencil why not a wooden dowel? That way you can put an eye screw at the end of the dowel, and now you have a loop that you can stick a pencil in, and pull. I haven't put on lubricant yet. And have yet to test it on smooth low friction floor. But I doubt the transition from concrete to gym floor will make a 3m difference.
