Re: Geologic Mapping C

Regarding the rather short and not very difficult Nationals test, does anybody know how ties were broken? We thought we got everything and handed it halfway through and ended up 18th so... Also, no offense to the event supervisors but I would have really appreciated a much longer and difficult test....

Re: Dynamic Planet B/C Question Marathon

If Google is reliable, I think the first ice core to hit bedrock was drilled in Byrd Station, Antarctica in 1968. The first one in Greenland (from my searching) that I could find was part of the GISP project and hit bedrock in 1991. Heinrich events, where massive amounts of icebergs break off from g...

Re: Dynamic Planet B/C Question Marathon

It's the Siachen glacier, located somewhere in the Kashmir region (India/Pakistan/China). It's important since it's one of the sites of territorial conflict between India and Pakistan, and the conflict - the heat and stuff generated from the military operations - sped up its retreat to 110 meters a ...

Re: Astronomy C

Does anyone know what the topic for this year's Astronomy is? I think it's Stellar Evolution & Variable Stars, but I'm not sure (they also might change it before the official rules come out).

Re: Dynamic Planet B/C

If you need help with topography or satellite imagery, you could always find some random topographic maps online or go to Google Earth and look in places where there might be glaciers. Many times, you can find a lot of conventional examples, as well as some more intricate puzzles, which you can prac...

Re: Fermi Questions C

I don't believe the scores are released publicly. The tests may be up though - I know a lot of the old ones are floating around out there.

Re: Dynamic Planet B/C

Does anyone know what was tested on the Nationals test, and how in depth it was in respective categories? I'm not sure if I need to look into till fabric analysis, stratigraphy, large-scale climate change/feedback, and some of the really obscure stuff. Also, in what format were the questions in?

Invitationals Schedule 2013-2014

There are a lot of invitationals in the first half of the Science Olympiad season (http://www.soinc.org/invitationals), but there doesn't seem to be any past February. Since some states have really early States, is it possible to have an invitational around April or so? We would host an invitational...

Re: Astronomy C

I believe it is Variable Stars (all kinds). The nationals test, again, was very nice. I felt that the test stressed a lot of wavelength identification, which, combined with the fact that they altered the coloring scheme on many of the images (from DS9?), really annoyed me. There was also a sound-spe...
