Re: Boomilever B/C

Cool! I fixed the issue now, but now it seems its causing some curvature in the compression members which is causing the tension members to dislocate from the base. Right now I have 3 1/8" balsa sticks on either side of the base that hold it to the tension members...is that enough? Or should I ...

Re: Boomilever B/C

@chinesesushi: 13.5 g and the bending is in a vertical motion, so I'm not sure how much bracing I need for a 1/4 by 1/4 (right now it's in 3.5 inch gaps) and the distal end is already under the loading block :) @iwonder Because the compression member (especially at the distal end) is bending, then t...

Re: Boomilever B/C

Hey guys! Recently, I've had some issues in trying to improve my boomilever and I've hit a bit of a snafu. So my boomilever looks kinda like and build entirely of balsa: http://imgur.com/6EhxiaL The recent issue is that it has been breaking toward the distal end quite frequently because as it is bei...

Re: Technical Problem Solving C

Caltech students made the tests...so ridiculous is all part of it. They gave you the pyruvate and OAA molecular structure and expected you to determine what amino acids are formed when they bind to aminotransferase. Points were given for both the correct molecular structure and the name of the amino...

Re: Technical Problem Solving C

If anyone has already competed in this event for states, I (and many others) would greatly appreciate it if you gave an overview of the test, the labs that you had to do, etc. The main problem for our team is the usage of probes, since my school is too poor to afford them. (The lab portion was also...

Re: Ongoing Contest(Scores)

Socal scores were quite competitive. Scores above 850 scored in the top 10. Rumors were that Troy had a 7/8 boomi with 14 kg. They got 4th.

Re: Boomilever B/C

We've been discussing the different bases for quite some time on this thread, so I assume he's referring to that. End Grain is lighter in my experience(my base is below 1g and hold the full load, being a piece of end grain) the ply seems pointless to me, as the vertical grain direction is just poin...

Re: Boomilever B/C

Henry's understanding things correctly. I would think 1/32nd bass on both sides should work fine. I actually think (and had suggested before) 1/64th birch plywood, which at least around here, Ace hardware carries, would be even better. With the weight saved by that vs. the 1/8th" of bass, I'd ...

Re: Boomilever B/C

I know that this may seem like a trivial question, but I have to ask. Recently, my boomilever broke at the base vertically along the centerline of the hole. When my partner and I put the bolt in at competition, it was slightly wider than the bolt I had used and tested at home. I believe that this ma...
