Re: Science Olympiad 2013-2014

Having to put team names on each rules packet and individualizing them would probably be too much work for Soinc and when you register to be a team, you are given a rules manual. Distributing them online/electronically would just cut out a step for teams to send it out on the internet and not have ...

Re: Science Olympiad 2013-2014

In the past, rules have only been provided via a printed manual. We historically haven't generally released electronic versions in PDF or via any other format or platform.......I can also pretty much assure you that PDF versions will never be publicly released. There are 2 primary reasons for this:...

Re: Boomilever B/C

Yes, we typically change the parameters of the construction events from year to year. Not sure yet what we'll do with Boomilever though. Are there any known possibilities? It seems like making it less than 15 cm would make it impossible to hold full 15 kg, as well as length manipulation... Is somet...

Re: Boomilever B/C

Sorry from deviating from the original topic but what's the best place to get wood from online? In terms of quality the best place to buy wood would be Specialized Balsa. ( http://www.specializedbalsa.com/ ) In terms of price it's most effective to buy in sheets and use a balsa stripper to cut the ...

Re: Boomilever B/C

My state is over and this year is over for me. For this type of event, will there be any rule changes? (I'll be in division C. Would it most likely stay the same; 15cm as height?) Yes, we typically change the parameters of the construction events from year to year. Not sure yet what we'll do with B...

Re: Shock Value B/Circuit Lab C

Just a question before my state competition :P http://www.princeton.edu/~aqu/Scioly/products/Scioly%20Practicetests/2006_PA_south_regional/exam.pdf I was looking at problem 8 in section 2, where it asks which range the voltmeter should be set on. I always thought ideal voltmeters had infinite resis...

Re: Shock Value B/Circuit Lab C

Super position is great if you have 2 batteries... it gets messy because when you need to solve a circuit since you have 4 batteries 4 times, its better to use node, usually faster than superposition. Also superposition only works in linear element networks I wouldn't expect a B Division test to ha...

Re: Shock Value B/Circuit Lab C

Oops, I meant "multilooped. It autocorrected it 0.o As in, circuits with multiple batteries. Can someone explain why the loop and current directions when using kirkhoffe's rules are arbitrary? Because if you choose the direction to be wrong, you'll simply end up with a negative current. However, yo...

Re: Boomilever B/C

My computer program says that it will not hold the full load. The 3/32" sq has a rather small safety factor and that assumes uniform wood. How strange, because according to MS3D, it has about 2 kilos margin of error past full load if they are simply substituted into an already working balsa tension...
