2015 Highlights Videos! Let's See Yours!

Greetings Olympians and coaches! There's one last event you all need to compete in: The Highlight Reel Challenge!!! Does your team make a Highlights video? We did this year (and may just do it every year from here on out)! We did our best to make it exciting for anyone to watch, not just members and...

Re: Write It Do It B/C

Greetings Writers and Doers! I am a coach, and have attached a strategy summary that I will be sharing with my WIDI-ers. I'm posting it here for two main reasons: 1) Olympians new to the event may find it as a helpful resource. 2) Seasoned WIDI veterans, if you could, please take a look at it and of...

Re: tryouts??

Mej710, I do try to work around students' other schedules, if they show that they are effectively using what time they do have. There are some that are compatible with our team. We practice Tue., Wed., Thurs., with an optional practice on Fridays (mostly for engineers who need the extra build time, ...

Re: tryouts??

Mej710, For my tryouts, I do not train the students, but instead, expect them to train themselves! A lot of Science Olympiad is independent learning. Very smart, yet very lazy students exist, and sometimes think they want to be part of the team. However, they have made it through their classes, ofte...

Re: tryouts??

We most definitely have tryouts. As the coach, I have worked hard to try and develop a team that is competitive for our Region, and I do not need nor want dead weight on the team. Unfortunately, we have interest from students who don't often realize that there is a lot of work to be successful in th...

Re: Corny Science Jokes

Schrodinger and Heisenberg are driving in a car that is pulled over by a police officer. The officer walks up to Heisenberg, who was driving, and asks "Do you know how fast you were going?" To which Heisenberg replies, "No, but I know where I am." The officer decides to search the cars trunk. After...

Re: Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey

As it is on at the same time as The Walking Dead, which my wife loves, I'm ashamed to say that I won't. However, I will catch every episode with the "On Demand" option. I have very high hopes, but with Tyson hosting, I know I won't be disappointed. He does have big shoes to fill, though. While the o...

SciOly Videos We Should All See

Is there a Science Olympiad video that has helped you significantly in your event? Have YOU made a Science Olympiad video that can show us something worthwhile, such as what you do to test your device or your preferred strategy/technique? Do you have a video of you or your team doing something Scien...

Need Some Lab Practice?

Greetings Material Scientists! From what my team experienced last year (2013 season), Material Science seemed to be a bit of a curve ball for the coaches at invitationals. As there aren't many Material Science classes in high schools (from my experience, at least), it seemed very much that few coach...

Re: Shock Value B/Circuit Lab C

Thanks for the replies and tips. We do have some circuit materials, but not enough. More shall be purchased. The "snap circuits" is the kind where you snap them together, but yes, real circuits are the way to go. We'll just work with both. For those who have done the event, what amount of experiment...
