Is there an advantage to a long launcher with a pistol grip handle on the bottom as opposed to a simple stick? Thanks in advance.

I understand that it is preferred to build the vehicle as wide as rules allow but I don't understand why. I understand as long as the rules allow but not the width. Would someone please enlighten me? Thank you.
