Re: Non-kit rules

It would appear that the "construction log" would be intended to verify that no kit was utilized. As others have noted, it would be hard to distinguish a plan-built and a kit-built plane. I guess take plenty of photos showing the scratch-building process! Is the burden of proof on the ES ...

Re: Non-kit rules

The poster is from Massachusetts, where they have revised national rules and renamed the event to " Wrong Stuff ." Their new rule 3.a. reads: "Kits are not allowed, but the use of rubber bands, rubber motors, and propeller assembly components (consistent with rule 3e) sourced from kit...

Re: Is there any official rule about alternates?

https://www.soinc.org/what-official-rule-alternate-team-members There is no "official" rule on "alternate" members. Alternates may participate only if one of the 15 regular team members can't make it the day of the competition or if a team member becomes ill or injured. Alternate...

Re: Your Daily Random Comment

Well, so my team was unable to attend the Harvard Awards ceremony, so I wanted to throw something together for them, and me being me, I decided to try to emulate the Avogadro power points as much as possible. Speaking of which, what prevented your team from attending awards? It's a fairly generic s...

Re: Mousetrap Vehicle C

I am a bit of a noob with CF so please excuse me if this is a stupid question. You can cut it with a regular hack saw and use regular steel nuts and bearings and stuff with it right? edit: so I did some research and apparently it is dangerous to cut carbon fiber if you don't have the proper ventila...

Re: Boomilever B/C

Thanks for all the info! I actually realized that I had a few more questions about construction: 1. What is a lamination? 2. How do you build your base? I don't know how to calculate the force the base undergoes, so I don't know how to build it efficiently. I'm thinking of putting a stick of 1/4 x ...

Re: Materials and 3D Printing?

How would you attach bearings to the extrusions? Also, wouldn't that be heavy compared to just printing the sides? You could use flanged bearings fixed with adhesive (epoxy) to the rim of holes drilled in the aluminum. Why not just normal bearings friction fit into the drilled holes? Not sure if th...

Re: Materials and 3D Printing?

3d printing connectors, using cf rods to construct the chassis. Same, except I use 10mm aluminum extrusions. Still light, but even stiffer. I use PLA for the connectors, I could go stronger but i’ve found the stiffness of PLA is more desireable than toughness. Side note: we have the same event rost...

Re: Trouble joining the SciOly chat.

You could try using the actual website at kiwiirc.com but i'm not sure if that'd help. Client used won't resolve banned connections. It's like trying to access a website blocked by your ISP by using Safari instead of Chrome. If you are accessing through a shared network, e.g. at a school, it is pos...
