Re: Politics

There has been a rationale put forward that guns make suicide easier, therefore this is a reason to restrict access to guns. This implies that the person making the argument is willing to forcibly prevent people from committing suicide. In my opinion, this is a problematic approach to suicide. And ...

Re: Anonymous test taking (kind of)

I feel like people are really overestimating the amount of bias that goes on. It's really hard to be biased.

Re: 9th Graders in Division B

Thank you Name for getting the point. And yes, "taking first across the board" is a bit hyperbolic, but there are schools in competitions who do just that. Hyperbolic yes, but it is possible to get pretty darn close. This discussion was started by a Div B coach and I am only trying to hea...

Re: 9th Graders in Division B

I'm glad someone brought this up as it is a "touchy" topic at best. We are a 6-8 middle school, and while we have had 9th graders on the team in the past, it has not always been fair to the team since 9th graders often have high school obligations and cannot devote as much time to practic...

Re: Last Invite Before a Regional

It really depends on how important regionals is for your team. If you attend a relatively less competitive regional and you are reasonably confident that you will qualify for states, you can probably do it. Both WW-P South and North attended an invite 3 days before regionals (BVF and MIT, respectiv...

Of the teams that often place in the top 10-15 at Nationals, how many & which ones have 9th graders as team members?

From what I've heard, most but not all.

First, check out this East-Approved neutral, mainly stat based article https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2017/10/2/16399418/us-gun-violence-statistics-maps-charts And also, Texas has a somewhat different culture than places like Chicago - however, things like the El Paso shooting have still o...

Re: Science Olympiad Events 2019-2020

Someone post the picture of the It's About Time binder https://scioly.org/gallery/albums/14/normal_largest_binder_-_pembroke_hill.jpg .... Why would someone go to all that effort to make a binder that big? Wouldn't it be unwieldy? And also, what event would even need that much info???? Pembroke Hil...

Re: Science Olympiad Events 2019-2020

Seconded. I remember when Chem Lab had a binder instead of cheat sheets. That was also the year the rules were phrased in such a way as to allow two partners only one calculator, but that's besides the point. Because most Chem Lab exams tend to be problem-solving based, having a binder really doesn...

Re: Pennsylvania 2019

My concern with that split is in Division B. If you draw those geographic lines, the Montco/Phila region has only 7 teams. It would have Bala Cynwyd and Welsh Valley, but it lacks the same depth of schools as Chester/Delaware. If you put Chester in with Montco/Phila, then you get a region of 13 tea...
