Re: It's About Time C

Thanks for the replies on the idea of implementing an escapement. We thought about it for a while but decided against it (we would have needed to redesign an entirely new clock). However, the information from these threads in general helped tons and I am happy to say we got 1st at our regionals with...

Re: Game On C

Does anyone have an idea of how complex the games should be? An hour seems awfully short to create anything super complicated that is also fully functional/nice looking.
Bumping this. It seems impossible to create a complex game with several sprites in less than an hour.

Re: It's About Time C

Would it be possible to make a gear system for a pendulum that would count the number of swings, in order to make it much more convenient to keep track of? I did this event last year and it seemed to me that with the time being widely varied, it was somewhat difficult to keep track of the number of ...

Re: Simple Machines B/Compound Machines C

Well, the main problem for us was measuring the masses quickly. Keeping the ratios exact and at the same time measuring them quickly was very hard to do, so if I do get to go to state (our coach is changing teams), then hopefully I can make some better adjustments to do it faster. The test was as ex...

Re: Simple Machines B/Compound Machines C

Regional competition was today for me. Well, thanks to everyone's comments and help, I managed to come home with the gold medal! Again, thank you everyone for the helpful formulae, tips, and diagrams/pictures!

Good luck to everyone else!

Re: Simple Machines B/Compound Machines C

Hi again,

Thank you Bernard for those pictures! However, I have a question. How would you attach the mass to the class 2 lever? If there's a string between the two levers, then you wouldn't be able to attach a mass, correct?

Thank you!

Re: Simple Machines B/Compound Machines C

Wait, so if you connected them side-by-side, when the Class 1 lever moves up on the opposite side of the load (the right side), what would happen to the Class 2 lever? Wouldn't it break? Sorry if I have the wrong picture here, but I'm a bit confused on how you would connect the two without adding to...

Re: Simple Machines B/Compound Machines C

Thank you so much for the helpful replies! Initially I thought that d1 was the distance from the fulcrum to the end of the 1st lever  For connecting the two levers together, would one lever be on top of another? I was thinking so from the diagram, but now that I think about it, it wouldn't nece...

Re: Simple Machines B/Compound Machines C

The left lever is pushing upwards on the right lever at the point of contact. If we look at the left lever alone, what mass would need to be on the other side of the lever to have it at equilibrium? From the equation, we get m=Y*d1/d2. The right lever is pushing downwards on the left lever at the po...

Re: Helicopters B

We flew Helicopters for 2 years in C division. Won State both years and were undefeated one year for the entire season so this is not sour grapes. Helicopters was the most unpleasant flying experience we have ever had. I think the rules are written in good faith and with good intentions but out her...
