Re: Ping Pong Parachute B/C

I've been testing with the Nerds Inc Model Z launcher and we've been having a problem with launcher consistency. At higher pressures (>30 PSI), the U-shaped pin does not pull out enough to release the bottle, perhaps due to the higher friction force between the pin and both the bottle and the metal...

Re: Launcher to purchase?

I want to perform some testing for Ping Pong Parachute, but I'm not sure which launcher to purchase. I'd appreciate if someone could give me a recommendation for one/
You can make one but I think one of the best that can be purchased is:

Re: Boomilever B/C

^^^^^ THAT was absolutely one of the COOLEST Videos I've ever seen! Thanks for sharing! Can't wait to se the Booms! No problem! The boomi videos that will be posted from this year are pretty great to watch and fun to create. We bumped up our lighting to about 10x what it was previously. We were abl...

Re: Boomilever B/C

Yeah I meant wasted wood lol. I like to test all of my pieces with SPFD before building, is there a method you use to sort your wood pieces after they are laser cut? So, choosing wood is... tedious. To be honest, the process of wood selection does change for us depending on the competition. For pro...

Re: Boomilever B/C

That's too bad, we have a really nice lab and I'd love to be able to just use solidworks + ai to design and cut one. You can use solidworks/autoCAD to still design and laser cut parts of the boomi, but not the whole thing. You could go as far as laser cutting all of the pieces individually (with th...

Re: Boomilever B/C

The problem with laser cutting is that all the grain still runs the same direction. Sheets of balsa are surprisingly weak when tensioned perpendicular to the direction of the grain, and they split. This tends to occur primarily on where the diagonal bracing would be. This. I saw a beautiful laser-c...

Re: Boomilever B/C

I suppose there are ways of getting really scientific and testing the tensile strength of bass, but the problem comes in actually attaching a quantifying device such as luggage scale. With 1/16" material this can very difficult without either mashing or bending the piece which adds shear forces to ...

Re: Score Predictions

Compared to last year, boomis need to be a bit more massive because of the 8 cm rule, so non-bonus scores should be lower than last year by perhaps 10% or so. With the bonus, 3k requires holding full whack with a 6.6g boomi. That's probably achievable by the best - given the top scores last year. I...

Re: Boomilever B/C

Wdym yikes? This effectively neutralizes all super wide boomis (which weren't very effective ngl) and paves the way for a chimney boomi meta to be rampant this year. (This years rules make boomi way easier ngl) Any "good" chimney boomi would be well within 8cm gap the vertical contact lines are giv...

Re: Boomilever B/C

I'd suggest you match the glue with the specific joint use... We use both Gorilla Glue (the Polyurethane type that foams) as well as the medium viscosity Jet Super Glue (cyanoacrylate). Using a foaming glue may not be a good choice for applying gussets, as it will just push the gusset away as it fo...
