Re: A national discussion:regional differences

Just to be clear, I am not involved in SO any more. I'm bringing this up as an issue but not out of frustration. I was aware of it as an issue but never heard the various sides discuss it.

Re: A national discussion:regional differences

I have heard that argument before. If it only hurts the must successful team or two it is a nonissue. That logic is fine if you don't believe in the competitive nature of the enterprise. if you do believe that it is a competition, then logic would suggest not handicapping the most successful teams. ...

Re: A national discussion:regional differences

Seems like it would help to first establish a goal.Maybe this forum will help determine the sentiments about the schedule issues. Is the goal that the schedules for Regionals and States be as close to the National schedule as possible? If so, the pragmatics would be guided by that goal even if it is...

Re: Unofficial Rankings C

Yes it is certainly possible for the team from any state, regardless of their States schedule, to win. But just a little less likely when schedules differ. My point isn't really to suggest that scheduling is what determines outcome. My comments are to suggest that the schedules should be standardize...

A national discussion:regional differences

I hope to encourage a discussion of standardizing procedures across regional, state and national competitions. State and regional competitions don't always use the same schedule as Nationals. To complicate things further, events are sometimes run differently at Regionals and States than at Nationals...

Re: Unofficial Rankings C

Kentucky I agree. The fact that NY refuses to align its schedule with Nationals handicaps the teams making placing in the top 5 almost impossible. It adds an unnecessary burden. Considering performance at such a high level, the smallest obstacle is difficult to overcome. Even though the term Olympia...

Re: Unofficial Rankings C

Not necessarily true that teams don't do well at their first Nationals at least from NY. NY teams at their 1st Nationals: CNS (6), Webster (8). No telling.

Re: Unofficial Rankings C

Couldn't possibly speculate cause you can't tell. anything can happen. they'll place higher if they don't spend 15 hours traveling in an old yellow school bus without air and lower if they do. They will do great regardless.

Re: Unofficial Rankings B

It would be presumptuous to assume anything except that the strongest two NY teams will win. Which ever they are, and I have my favorite of course, they will represent NY very well at Nationals. All together, last year combining Divisions, NY took 20% of top 10 at Nationals which is similar to a few...

Re: Unofficial Rankings B

It's way premature to speculate since NY and other states have yet to have the state competition. But last year both NY teams made top 10 at Nationals. Which two that will be is yet to be determined. But both will be very strong.

Re: Unofficial Rankings C

Can't disagree Kentucky.Every team has different challenges. F-M has 15 members who stay as a team from start to finish. There aren't a few extras to assign to a couple of events where there is conflict for states while others bow out of States but study for nationals.I wasn't on the A team but my i...

Re: Unofficial Rankings C

The team of F-M's former head coach won States for 7 straight years when she was at a different school and another 14 times when she came to F-M. Her old school stopped winning when she left. The current head coach isn't new to SO but is new as the head coach. Last year was the first year without th...

Re: Unofficial Rankings C

" FM hasn't been as strong recently, and LASA hasn't exactly been a powerhouse (they didn't even make nats last year). Ward had the worst luck of the bunch, they won't be there. What does this mean? " Wouldn't count FM out. There was a new coach last year since their coach retired after ma...
