Thoughts after Harvard Invitational (HUSO)

The Harvard Invitational (HUSO) just finished about an hour ago. As an event supervisor and volunteer, thank you to all the students, parents and coaches who came to the event! You all made my first supervisor experience more vibrant and fun. Seeing students discuss about my Fermi Questions brought ...

Re: Optics B/C

Now that Nats is over, I am curious if any team has a consistent strategy for 5 mirror and >1 barrier. My partner and I figured out 5 mirror 1 barrier with great accuracy, but couldn't find a consistent one for >1 barrier. Our strategy: use the center barrier. We made small protractors and sticks fo...

Re: Chemistry Lab C

Hi! I was practicing Chem Lab and for a few calculations I didn't agree with the answer key. Can you check my work? Thanks! 1. An object with mass 46.2g displaces 0.34 Liters of water when submerged in a tank. What is the object’s density? 46.2g/340cm^3=0.135g/cm^3. 2. Lead has a melting point of 32...

Re: [COMPLAINT] The New Watermark

Not only is the watermark annoying, it's also not in compliance with Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, nor does it protect the site. "A third recent example of acts, policies, or practices of foreign governments which qualify for § 301 enforcement is found in the determination made by the P...

Re: State qualifiers- how many study events does one person usually prepare for?

We have about the same number of people doing 2, 3, 4 events. Generally builders do 2 b/c we are not good with building. Doing few events means you can focus on them = good. The experienced students (officers) do 4+ since we have done many events before and don't need to spend much time on them to d...

Re: Materials Science C

In the sonic powerpoint there are a few formulas for weight distribution I don't quite understand... Number Average \overline{M_n}=\frac{\sum N_iM_i}{\sum N_i} , Weighted average = \overline{M_w}=\frac{\sum N_iM_i^2}{\sum N_iM_i} , Molecular weight average \overline{M_z}=\frac{\sum N_iM_i^\alpha}{\s...

Re: New York 2018

Here's how my school/region is doing it. At regionals, the preparation of trial events doesn't impact which school team you are on. If you think it's a lot of fun (go Quiz Bowl!), then you can prepare and compete! The region puts the events on a lunch block so there is little conflict :) At states, ...
