Re: Road Scholar B

In checking the schedule of events for next year's SO Summer Institute, one of my former Olympians saw that Road Scholar is not listed as one of the scheduled events for 2020-21. Anyone hear about this?

Re: Fulcrum for Compound Machines? General Discussion about useful equipment as well.

Can someone please explain how to make it so the fulcrum fits perfectly with the beams? Like did you guys just use a drill and drill the same size screw into the beams and use that as the fulcrum? Or was there a hole drilled and a dowel was used as the fulcrum? And if so how would you find the perf...

Constant of Proportionality

For those of you who have attended an invitational already, question.... I see on the score sheet for Simple Machines (Div B) that the ratio scores are being inputted as A/B and B/C. Are you giving them the proportion as 4:1. 6:1, 3.2:1, etc... or are you dividing A by B and answering with the const...

Re: 2020 LISO Invitational (Long Island, NY) Div B & C

To all NY City Science Olympiad teams - The Long Island Science Olympiad (LISO) is a great opportunity to get in some practice, have some fun and compete against a lot of the best teams around (not to mention coming home with all graded tests!) And don't forget, it is the least expensive SciOly Invi...

Re: 9th Graders in Division B

Thank you Name for getting the point. And yes, "taking first across the board" is a bit hyperbolic, but there are schools in competitions who do just that. Hyperbolic yes, but it is possible to get pretty darn close. This discussion was started by a Div B coach and I am only trying to hear different...

Re: 9th Graders in Division B

Taking Bio (which im trash at lol) gave me no advantage whatsoever over other 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. What does give an advantage however, are adults building devices for the competitors. An 8th grader on my team won 1st in thermo at nats in 2018, and two op 8th graders on our team got 2nd in wa...

Re: 9th Graders in Division B

Also 9th graders don't have as much as an advantage as you would think. Most are not taking AP/advanced sciences as a freshman, and don't really get an advantage because they are in Highschool. It's mainly just about experience....tho I'll say that if my middle school let 9th graders compete in Div...
