Re: Ikara Prop Bearing?

Update: team ended up stuffing a slightly sanded piece of 3/32" basswood into the bearing and then gluing the wood to the motorstick. We wrapped up part of it with thread and then gave it a bit of glue. Works like a charm.

Thanks for your suggestion!!

Re: Plane Won't Climb Upwards?

Brian T and Jeff Anderson, Sorry about the late reply. I've been swamped with tests and assessments this week at school. About the rubber, we're using a 15:1 winder and putting in about 50-70 winds. When were originally testing the motors to see what the breaking point was, we broke an unstretched o...

Re: Plane Won't Climb Upwards?

An accident earlier this week actually destroyed most of the wings/stabilizers we were working on, and since our invitational is this weekend (i.e. tomorrow) we decided to make "emergency" wings out of Styrofoam plates. Our planes are kind of rudimentary and makeshift at the moment, though we're wor...

Ikara Prop Bearing?

So far for this year and last year my team has been using Delta Dart propellers, which have a cap that goes over a 1/8" x 3/8" motorstick. I would glue together lengths of 1/8" balsa to fit the cap, which usually worked fine, even though the extra glue probably added weight to the plane. We recently...

Re: Plane Won't Climb Upwards?

I just tried to fly it with close to 1000 turns on the motor and it still won't climb up...any more suggestions? I noticed today that the propeller shaft isn't exactly parallel to the motorstick of the plane -- instead it's angled down a bit relative to the fuselage. Is it possible that that's why i...

Why are wings elevated on posts

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but why are wings and horizontal stabilizers elevated on posts? If they were glued flat onto the motorstick/tailboom, would that be okay?

Plane Won't Climb Upwards?

We've just finished building our plane and it won't climb upwards when we launch it. The wing has a chord length of 6 cm, and laid flat it's 46 cm long but there are polyhedral joints in the center rib and at the tips so the horizontally projected span is 40 cm. Each rib is slightly cambered, and th...

Re: Design Tips

I did see that document! It's been incredibly helpful! So far I've just been adapting the design described there for this year's restrictions (like the new chord length) and also other things I've read about, like polyhedral and tapered tips but the resulting plane has not really been flying that we...

Re: Photos/Videos

Thanks for your kind comments! The plane was built to be totally adjustable -- all the things like wing posts are paper tubes that slide along the fuselage and the motorstick and tailboom themselves are just two 1/8 x1/8 sticks that are taped together to overlap in the middle. My team is kind of ine...

Re: Photos/Videos

So this isn't really flying that well, but I did come up with this. I feel like a lot of the proportions are off and because my team is sort of new to this, I tried to make all the parts/lengths/distances adjustable. Hasn't really been working though as the plane just sort of sinks and drops to the ...
