Re: Golf Ball Task

Can you put tape on the golf ball? Would that count as unmodified?
I would say no - you should be able to swap out your golf ball with a new, regulation golf ball and have it work perfectly.

Re: Boomilever B/C

Question about supervising Boomilever - any recommendations as to a scale for weighing sand for this event? I know a lot of people, myself included, usually used school equipment, but that's not currently an option for me. I appreciate any suggestions!

Re: Circuit Lab Question Marathon

Your numbers are off by I think a factor of 2. Quick check: 5V across 2000 ohms is 2.5mA and across 1800 is 2.8mA, for a total current of 5.3mA across 514.3 ohms, for a voltage of 2.7 volts. Thus you have a 9-5-2.7=1.3V discrepancy in the 5V load configuration. Also finding the maximum efficiency m...

Re: Mission Possible C

They could also use the method of 2014 and 2015: allowing competitors to choose different energy transfer types. My impression is that they will not return to this particular approach, as it was difficult to implement and score, generating numerous appeals. Also, I thought that they kept the style ...

Re: Circuit Lab Question Marathon

I have no idea how to even begin to solve this question, which obviously begs the question "Where should I learn?" Do you have textbook suggestions, or website suggestions? How to begin to solve this question - I presume one of the two in series and the other in parallel with the load. I would atte...

Re: Mission Possible C

Does anyone know the Nationals target time?
I've heard that it was 98 seconds, but I think that this is probably useless to you at this point.
Actually that helps, I'm nowhere near nats, I just want to compare scores with the right target time.

Re: Scores

I'd agree with 1500+ for the top 6 at a minimum. However, it'll entirely depend on the time they choose. If it's closer to 90 second times, ~1500 is reasonable; if it's closer to 120 second times the cutoff could approach 1600. I think you may underestimate teams in the 11-20 range, since it is very...

Re: Hovercraft B/C

I'm just going to ask a question because no one's verified the answer. With what constant velocity can a 4.00 hp motor raise a mass of 125 kg? Answer|2.43 meters per second Can you explain this one So the first thing to understand is that hp is a unit of power, just not an SI unit. 1 hp = 745.7 W. ...

Re: Michigan 2018

Anybody know what went down with Troy? We heard they were DQ'd from Write it Do it, but they placed 36th in the results. A DQ should have been a 52 I think, why didn't they get 36? Then they only had like 5 kids at the awards and no roar from the crowd whenever they were announced, so I suspect mos...

I was up fixing mine at 2 am before states. Had I not run the device before than a similar thing would've happened to me
Congrats on your placing at states! Are you willing to share your score at competition?

Re: The Event that "Got Away"

For me, it would have to be Circuit Lab. In middle school, I let other students compete it due to a conflict with one of my other events. Unfortunately, it rotates back into the cycle next year, which is too late for me to compete.

Re: Scores

We just placed first at MI states! I'm not sure about the exact score, but according to my timer, we had: 105 second run time, 90 second chemical timer, 67 second target time. We had all 14 tasks, the battery bonus, and a 31x31x31cm device. I believe this results in a score of ~1500. I'm still slig...
