Re: Final Action

For those of you who have been using those small recordable devices, how have you gotten around the fact that most of them have (lithium) coin batteries? As far as I know, none of those recordable devices run on regular non lithium batteries (although at our regional, the event supervisor didn’t as...

Re: Gas Expansion Task

Has anyone else thought about using a pressure sensor for this task? You would only need to make a minuscule change in pressure so the whole action would go faster. As an electromechanical approach, a differential HVAC vacuum switch might be ideal for that. In the application, they sense the relati...

Re: Balloon Task

Here is one perspective on chemicals and concentration:

But as noted in the other thread where you were asking about this, hydrogen gas isn't going to pass safety either (if that's the direction you were going).

Re: Photochemical Task

Concerning the "signal light" idea, I appreciate it from the perspective that it does inform the judge that the action is taking place. But the strict interpretation of the rules is that the "scoring" part of the action (per 3.d.) isn't visible, just an arbitrary signal light. I would recommend the ...

Re: Final Action

If you design your circuit so that the action grounds the arduino pin, then you can use the integrated INPUT_PULLUP setting (it has internal 20kOhm pullups). In that case then reading will be normally TRUE due to the pullup and change to FALSE when the action grounds that input pin. pinMode(7, INPUT...

Well, let's look at it this way: Vinegar (~5% acetic acid, balance water): Here's a random googled MSDS that indicates it is not hazardous and requires no special handling equipment https://www.cos.net.au/msds/SAUC3010.pdf Glacial Acetic acid (100%): Here's a random googled MSDS that incidates you n...

Re: The [Not So] Official Scioly [non endorsed] e-invitational

I spoke with NSO on this topic specifically to better understand what is allowed and what is not. Here are the key points for what we need to implement here: Language like tournament/invitational is not allowed for an online event per NSO policy. Online practice is specifically allowed and can be re...

Re: Mission Possible C

The autonomous wording this year is interesting. Last year for example dealt with it the usual way: "After the Start Task, the device must be designed to operate autonomously..." The key word historically being designed to operate autonomously. Accidental stoppages required Touches were penalized, b...

Re: Chemical Clocks

Ah, but the button on the recorder is no different from an electric switch (inside the recorder, that's all it is). So if switches are banned, your method also fails. Fair enough, I didn't consider that proposal thoroughly enough. So you could have the timer release the wound spring (uh oh, does th...
