Re: Hovercraft B/C

Alright, so for some reason I have a bottle cap of about 10 penny roles, I'm fairly sure its because of my skirt design, I've tried so many different designs. Would anyone care to enlighten me on how their skirt works. Ahh, the skirt. https://scioly.org/wiki/index.php/Hovercraft#Skirt gives types o...

Re: Thermodynamics B/C

I find it annoying how they say the water temperature is say 70 C but when it ends up in our beaker it has dropped to 55 C. Anyone got a way to combat this problem or it pointless as it is most likely a event supervisor run problem? :?: As the others have pointed out, there is no way for the event ...

Re: Thermodynamics B/C

Thank you! On average, what's the ideal difference of temperature to make sure your device works? When I tested my device using 150 ml of 60 C water, the final temperature was 50 C Is this good? That's a fantastic score. Just don't expect a high prediction score if competing with people with a dece...

Re: Thermodynamics B/C

Does anyone have an idea of what a 'good' total score is? I don't really even know what to expect, since everything is relative. Everything (from the test to the ice water) counts, so prioritize what is important to you. I would strongly suggest looking back at section 5 in the rules to determine h...

Re: New York 2018

This is probably the wrong section for it, but I'm posting it as a general for the New York division. Who has a final results list downloaded for the 2016 Division B States? The links all expired, so I was wondering if someone has a .csv or .xlms file hanging around. I might be gracious to upload th...

Re: Thermodynamics B/C

As I am graduating from Division B this year (bienvenue to Division C, I guess. And another state!), what would you say is different from Division B thermo compared to Division C thermo? I've looked at the practice tests and to me, they look Division D (a college division Science Olympiad? Not too s...

Re: New York 2018

Unome, can you check if the Wiki formatting is decent for NYC Metro? I fixed a little. Looks pretty good to me, though I'd recommend including columns for the tournament date and number of state bids, and for the state placements of each team (like this page ). You can also use div tags to align th...

This is true. Fun fact: Actually, Gelinas has taken home a 10th place trophy in 2015, 2016, and 2017! In 2014 they just missed out.

Sadly we will never be as talented as Gelinas.
But, you can never give up!

Re: New York 2018

It's fun predicting both divisions! On the other hand, doesn't Gelinas have a really good shot at 1st compared with others? At most, I could see Eagle Hills maybe losing their second, but I'm not sure how likely that even is. True anything is possible, but usually there's only a few teams that take...

Re: Thermodynamics B/C

Prediction Score is a nice idea. Yes, you should know how your device perform, if you spend enough time collecting/charting the temperature over time. But the temperature that you chart depends on how the water was dispense. During testing with your own tool and in your environment, you have the co...

Re: Thermodynamics B/C

On a completely unrelated note, has anybody had success using a vacuum as a means of insulation? It seems like a farfetched idea but this is a question that I've had on my mind for a while now. I mean, anything is possible. We just used a simple styrofoam box which was consistent, and had some poly...

Re: Thermodynamics B/C

In response, the event is composed of quite a bit dumb luck, as are all build events, this one just more so. The prediction score is more important then HREF because the PS is what matters in real world applications. It's interesting to how much dumb luck there is, because my team actually came up ...

Re: Science Quiz Bowl B/C [NY TRIAL]

Science Quiz Bowl seems to me a lot like the Science Bowl competition run by the Department of Energy, most people I know who do that prepare by just reading lots of different science textbooks, is that how this event is normally done as well? Our team was one of the top 6 finalists for the regiona...

Re: Thermodynamics B/C

Practice is the device testing portion - how well can you apply some of the topics to an actual device? The topic of the emphasis with prediction over retention also leads to the next point about the IWB. At my block during the competition, nobody bothered with the ice water, which was simply a bag...
