Re: Pennsylvania 2018

3. Park Forest (150) Park Forest is so predictable. They've alternated between 2nd and 3rd for the last seven years. (now they just have to keep The S7reak going!) I think that at the B division level, a lot of things depend on the coach, and the PF middle school coach has been doing a great job fo...

Re: Events you wish Science Olympiad had

Isn't this what WIDI is supposed to be WIDI is more technical writing. I'm talking more about communicating science to the layperson, which is really important in science, too. And I mean there are objective ways to evaluate speeches and debates. Otherwise, they wouldn't be graded assignments in En...

Re: Events you wish Science Olympiad had

I really wish there was some sort of communication event. I guess experimental design is, a little bit, but as someone who is graduating college and moving into the real world of science, I wish SciOly would emphasize communication, because it's huge. There's no point in doing science if you can't r...

Re: Pennsylvania 2018

PA is fun to follow. It tends to be unpredictable, which is interesting. Ha! That's fair, I suppose. I definitely feel like PA has some really solid teams all around, which is probably what leads to that unpredictability. For example, when I was a competitor at CPA regionals, Spring Grove was a pow...

Re: Pennsylvania 2018

Also, Unome, if you don't mind me asking, it looks like you're from Georgia; what sparks your interest in the PA competitions?
(I hope that didn't sound accusatory--I'm genuinely curious)

Re: Ways to make practice fun

But the captains were just people that made sure everyone had a good time when it was time to have fun, and to work hard when we needed it. When we were at our lowest, the bus ride home from a competition we didn't do so well at, they would always give the best motivational speeches. They never mad...

Re: Ways to make practice fun

Food. This is slightly shallow, but our officers bought donuts for the whole team at the first Regional competition I went to, and I am very pro-donuts. Last year before States, a random team member also made us lemon bars and they were so good so this year, I tried baking meringues or shortbread o...

Ways to make practice fun

I'm a newer coach (and an alum), and I'm struggling to make Science Olympiad fun for the kids. When I was a student, I was very much of the "we just have to study hard" mentality, but now that I'm participating as an assistant coach, I see that this approach (which is still the status quo at my old ...

Re: Mission Possible C

Thanks for the tips, guys! I've got practice on Monday, so I'll see what my builders say. Fingers crossed they'll find it a bit less intimidating when I tell them of your guys' approaches.
