My Team Did Worse

Yesterday was the regional and my team's ranking went down by 6 places compared to last year's. My school is a pretty weak team. As a vice captain, I am very embarrassed about this. I spent hours trying to get my team together but no one came to the first study session so that plan was thrown into t...

Re: Protein Modeling C

Ok thanks.
I skipped the section about photosynthesis and electron transport chain so I should probably go back.

Re: Protein Modeling C

Sorry to ask so many questions, but I didn't do any invitationals so I have no idea what the tests are like.
Is it safe to assume that the Jmol exploration will test proteins that are related to what we are learning (CRISPR)?

Re: Protein Modeling C

For the Jmol exploration, they won't expect us to use other PDB visualization programs that include ligand explorer, simple viewer, and protein workshop right?
I am currently reading a jmol manual that is quite comprehensive.

Re: Protein Modeling C

I recommend using the addgene e book about CRISPR. Its more than 100 pages long, but I read the CRISPR information. I don't have enough time to read the methodology and experiments :( By the ways, is the JMOL exploration on the regional using Jmol software (Java) or online Jmol? How big is the diffe...

Re: Protein Modeling C

For Jmol, I am kind of confused between the cpk and spacefill command for atom display. I notice that cpk is used for alpha helix. can someone explain the difference and the advantages?

Communication Channels (Slack, Trello, Basecamp)

Hi there, I was wondering that what online communication programs do your teams use asides from email. In my school, Slack is used for robotics and speech & debate, but I don't know how helpful it is for Science Olympiad. I don't want to create more spam from these software services. I was thinking ...

Re: Protein Modeling C

They said that for the regional, only the alpha carbon backbone is judged. Does that mean it is not necessary to add decorations on the protein (side chains, DNA) or the decorations are needed at regional level? Also, is a flashcard needed for the regional?

Re: I've Lost All my Motivation. Help!

Thank you for bringing this up. I think part of the reason I lost motivation is that I am focused on other competitions. I struggled a few months earlier because I was too worried about the medals. Now, I accepted that I may not win and that is ok, because learning the science is already the award! ...
