Re: Southern California 2020

Oak Valley was undefeated in the 2020 season! The only school in SoCal to be undefeated this season! Lol you guys haven't even gone against JT A, Kraemer A, or Kennedy A. Cálmate. Edit: not discounting this achievement, just saying not to get too cocky as typical Or is it the other way around: JT, ...

Re: PICTURES, SCORES, VIDEOS!!

Tiger, what weight sticks are you using for the main compression pieces on your chimney design? For Towers we were going down to around 1g per stick, so with 4 in a chimney boomilever design I was thinking it would be about the same.

Re: Best glue for laminating balsa sheets?

They were wanting to try for the compression beams on the bottom to help prevent the bowing-breaking that they keep experiencing right at 13kgs. I was thinking 2 sheets of 1/16 balsa laminated together might help.

Best glue for laminating balsa sheets?

My students want to try laminating sheets of balsa to cut their own sticks. What glue would you suggest for this? CA seems like it would absorb too quickly into the balsa before properly layering the second piece.

Thanks! We store in mailing tubes in a dry location. Any other special ways to store it that you would suggest?

Lifespan of balsa and bass sticks

Any idea the lifespan of precut balsa and bass sticks from merchants like Specialized and National? I have some (expensive) sticks from towers last year that we still haven’t used, so I am trying to decide whether to store them for another year or toss them.

Weight for Main Compression and Tension Chords?

What weight balsa or bass are you using for your main compression chords? I suspect we (being accustomed to building light towers and bridges) are starting too low with around 1g balsa for the main compression and tension pieces. I am thinking of having my students bump up to 2g balsa per stick as m...

Re: Remembering Len Joeris (Balsa Man)

Dear Jean and Ben, Thank you for sharing this news about your father. I am certain it was very hard for you, but hope you find a little bit of joy knowing how much he meant to us nameless, faceless friends of Science Olympiad. I discovered this forum my first year of coaching Bridge, almost 3 years ...
