Re: New York 2019

Congratulations to Ward Melville and Columbia! It was a great competition and I’m glad that all of the events ran smoothly. Also, I just want to point out that Columbia set a new record as the only team to ever score under 100 at New York States. They absolutely look like a top 5 national team.

1348 won New York State with an 85 second target. We had 9 tasks but no touches.

Re: Astronomy C

Two stars orbit in a binary system. Star A's orbit traces a circle with an apparent radius of 600 milliarcseconds, while star B's orbital traces a circle with an apparent radius of 200 milliarcsecond. Star A is a main sequence star with a luminosity of 4.2 solar luminosities and an apparent magnitud...

Re: Astronomy C

Attempt:|Galaxy A: 2.692*10^27 W = 7.03 solar luminosities M = 4.83-2.5log(L) = 2.71 d = 10^([m-M+5]/5) = 68.48 pc (this is an impossibly close galaxy, but you can still do the math with it) Galaxy B: P (days) = 365.25*0.04252 = 15.53 days M = -2.81logP - 1.43 = -4.78 Now this is the tricky ...

Re: Astronomy C

I've noticed that there seem to be two different equations used to calculate recessional velocity from redshift. The more commonly used one, v = Z*c, works fine for relatively close objects, but creates a problem for objects with redshifts > 1. The equation is problematic because it implies that we ...

Re: Way Too Early Predictions

Div C: 1. Troy 2. Acton-Boxborough 3. Mason 4. Solon 5. WWPN (or WWPS) 6. Mounds View 7. 7L/Clements 8. Boca Raton 9. Columbia 10. Harriton 11. Mira Loma 12. New Trier This is looking like one of the most competitive groups of teams in years. I listed 12 because all of them seem like easy top 10 pla...

Re: Cornell Invitational (Division B and C)

Does anyone have the answer to question 25b on the astro test? The key hasn't been published and I think I corrected the mistake I made but have no way to check my new answer.
