Re: Illinois 2020

They also have their own plan with phases based upon how the state is doing: http://www.illinoisolympiad.org/uploads/5/6/0/1/56012869/covid_phases_tentative_plan.pdf I'll look forward to hearing how they imagine "drive-thru testing" for builds might work. There isn't time to do this on the day (you...

Re: Tournaments Run with Test Writing Teams

I know our team finds coming up with enough volunteers to proctor and grade all the tests at an invitational to be a significantly bigger burden than writing the tests.

Re: Tournaments Releasing Raw Scores

I am going to bring up something slightly different to think about that as a tournament director I have encountered. At the Boyceville Invitational we have released raw scores to the teams who have competed, but do not release them publicly. Many coaches and tournament personnel over the years have...

Re: Illinois 2020

That being said, my big concern is not whether or not we can run build events fairly at a tournament under satellite guidelines, but whether or not some students will be able to compete under the satellite level. I feel like it puts teams that are unable to meet in-person at a higher disadvantage t...

Re: Illinois 2020

splane21 pointed me at this https://www.soinc.org/play/tournaments from national. My reading of this is that under Illinois "phase 4" rules, we'd be in "Satellite SO" territory - gatherings of more than 50 people not permitted, but schools are operating. I don't see how you can reasonably operate fl...

Re: Illinois 2020

I have a feeling that many invitationals will operate at a much more limited capacity and social distancing being recommended. I don't see how you could operate a "normal" invitational this fall. There are going to be two different aspects - what is sensible, as regards virus transmission, and what...

Re: Indiana 2020

On the subject of colleges and universities, it’s still kind of in-the-air. Colleges are all taking different approaches to the scenario. For example, IU plans to go online for November till February. On the other hand, UIUC has stated that they are pushing for restoring “face-to-face teaching” in ...

Re: Measuring Devices

Is buying a laser measuring device for testing a good investment. It's not really necessary - you're measuring the distance along the floor. Doing that with a normal tape measure is easy - your floor is obviously free of obstructions, because your car is traveling on it. They're useful enough toys,...

Re: "Each participant may bring one sheet of paper"

Hmm... I think the issue here is two copies of the same cheatsheet makes sense, but I think there was an FAQ that specifically allows the cheatsheets to have different content(it'd be extremely difficult to nearly impossible to enforce anyway), so I think it would make more sense to have x number o...

Re: Tweaks for 2021

What about completely making all parts of the plane by hand, and no kits allowed. This would truly make the teams stand out from one another. For the vast majority of normal teams, the kits at least give them a place to start. You still have to be able to tune the plane (and you see very different ...
