Re: A Plea for Conscientiousness in Grading and Test Design

3) (idk about your place but at least here, ppl use college-ruled a lot and i have no idea whether anyone gets frustrated with it bc i haven't heard of any complaining about it yet, besides this post) yeah I'm not sure how much of an issue the line height is but I do agree that it can be. I can try...

Re: Poorly Run Event Stories

WiFi lab seemed to pose Event Supervisors more than the average number of challenges - perhaps because they hadn't actually tried to see what was possible with the event, and made bad assumptions? At several competitions, the antenna test was held in a classroom. And of course you can make the refer...

Re: A Plea for Conscientiousness in Grading and Test Design

Personally, I find your "efficient" copy very difficult to read. The total lack of whitespace or clear visual delineation between questions is a problem, and the space provided for answers is woefully inadequate given the size of many students' handwriting. Your question zero expects the s...

Re: Wind Power B/C

Rule 6b requires the ES to provide "one or two 20" multispeed box fan(s)". An ES should not provide any other kind of fan, or a fan of a different size. Sometimes an ES doesn't read the rules, and just does something they think is reasonable. Often when this happens, it isn't reasonab...

Re: Positon of dowel

how bout how far off from the front of the bot? "No part of the Vehicle can extend beyond the front of the dowel, other than the dowel attachment device." So the dowel, and what holds it on, has to be the frontmost part of your robot. There's no real advantage to extending it further than...

Re: Construction parameter l iv

My experience is the same as TheBananzas - this gets interpreted as constraining the projection of the motion on to the horizontal plane. It would be nice if the rules committee could clarify this interpretation the next time Roller Coaster comes around...

Re: Aiming at centerpoint of target

It's easy for me to imagine an ES forbidding a student from placing markers on the target, ruling that such might mark the surface, and so, temporarily, "damage" it. The FAQ you quote seems to leave it to the ES's discretion whether or not the students may do this, which isn't very satisfa...

Re: Most Competitive Science Olympiad Event

And it gets worse. The team that shared a room with us came back from Ecology, saying "the only thing we didn't know was _____" (one single question near the end). They got 22nd in the event. ...although your teammates might not be very good judges of what they actually knew. Back in Div ...

Re: Projectile clarification

I don't think anyone is going to notice the difference between a 3.7mm ball and a 3.4mm ball at a competition. I think you've been misled by google. A table tennis ball is 40mm in diameter. From the ITTF handbook: 2.3 THE BALL 2.3.1 The ball shall be spherical, with a diameter of 40mm. 2.3.2 The ba...

Re: Most Competitive Science Olympiad Event

This thread feels one-ended now but I will not forget how our 90% correct (i think) ecology test yesterday got 14th place. That's my new vote. Oh dear. Your test was too easy. This happens sometimes - I suspect it's when teachers who are new to science olympiad are event supervisors. If a teacher s...
