Powerhouse B Schools

Hi everyone- I was wondering why and how certain schools, especially those in division B manage to stay dominant for so long. With division C schools it makes more sense, since they have an influx of experienced SciOly members who already “know” their event strengths and subjects; but B schools are ...

We are letting the glue dry overnight.

Base failures

Our boomilever team has tested three boomilevers and all of them have been failing at the base. We have been gluing 1/4 inch dowels to the tension members with gorilla glue. We also glued pieces of balsa wood over and around the dowel to increase surface area. Every time we test the dowel is ripped ...

Re: Configurations of the Boomilever

The first configuration you posted is a picture of a tension boomilever. The second one is of a compression boomilever. Both are allowed but tension boomilevers are overall considered better because compression strength decreases with length- thus by making the compression member span the hypotenuse...

Re: Boomilever B/C

You mean that it is ok to leave the last 5 cm of the boom without bracing at all? I was thinking it would drive down the score since booms would snap at the 5 cm point away from the distal end... or is that why the tension members are so important??

Re: Boomilever B/C

Since the eyebolt of the loading block needs to pass through the boomilever to attach to the rest of the loading assembly, this means that there cannot be bracing where the eyebolt is. If this is true, then doesn't the boomilever depend on the strength of the last 5 cm of the compression member? The...

Re: Roller Coaster B

How much gap have you been able to get with the new transparent tubing rule? The adjustable tubing makes it seem like we can easily get more gap even with smaller dimensions.
