Re: Elevated Bridge B/C

How the heck did that winning bridge weigh 5.52 grams?? Exactly wat im wondering.... More likely is that they made an order for specialty balsa/bass wood to meet the needs of their design. Each peace is expensive to buy but one could get the exact density of the wood they require meaning get extrem...

Re: Elevated Bridge B/C

What kind of bridges are you guys trying? Are you building relatively heavy bridges (>10g) that can hold a lot of weight or a less heavy bridge that doesn't hold as much but just going for efficiency? A bridge over 10 g can't get an efficiency of >1500. The bridges built are about 5.5-6 grams, hold...

Re: Elevated Bridge B/C

Hey guys from Kansas, This year Kapuan Mt. Carmel (the 3 time defending champ of the balsa event) got a score of 2500 at state. However, they will not be going to nationals. My dad said they could have probably gotten close to 2750 for nats. Collegiate (second from last year) got around 1700s? I thi...

Re: Elevated Bridge B/C

Hey quickestwinne, I'm fairly sure I talked to your dad at the competition. We talked balsa engineering for a long time before I was summoned to another event. Can you tell him how the girl from WA did? I got 7th with 1517, holding whole weight at 9.89g. Another special congrats to nejanimb. What a...

Re: Elevated Bridge B/C

top one for C was about 2400 and top one for b was about 2100. I have seen the top one for C. It's at my house. :D The one that got 2nd in B is also there-it got around 2000. I'm guessing that you were the coach of those two teams. Congrats to the top bridges. Impressive scores from both divisions....

Re: Elevated Bridge B/C

http://picasaweb.google.com/smartkid222.222/MyPicturesPublic#5320906850022392354 In this picture there are 4 pieces of wood 1/8 x 1/16. Notice how the top 2 and the bottom one look fairly the same, but the 3rd one from the top is ligher in color. Is this b/c of grain or density? I dont' know much a...

Re: Elevated Bridge 2009

<SNIP>But i cant imagine how you would go about building the SAME EXACT bridge. There would probably be a lot of inconsistencies in the wood strength. <SNIP> <SNIP>Now for making 2 identical bridges, this is usually not feasable. particuliry because of the variations in balsa wood. If you want to m...

Re: Elevated Bridge 2009

Just to let you know what the high standard is, I asked my dad(coach for B and C in elevated) and his students from middle school how their bridge is coming along when I went home today(they won the gold at nationals last year in tower). The first one they build (which is our backup-so we overbuild ...

Re: Elevated Bridge 2009

if you have access to autocad, I would suggest you use that to design your bridge.

Like Mr. anderson said, the bridge test program has some flaws and while it will help a little it is best to design and test real-life models than simulations.
