Re: Replaying Events for 2021

Question for other captains: how are you guys handling this? We want to do summer meetings, and our schools are closed for the next 3 weeks, so we'll be sending out tests that we had originally stockpiled for states so people can work on it while schools are shut. We are also trying to encourage par...

Re: Replaying Events for 2021

One general policy many of you might not be aware of is that, in general, every year we keep ~50% of the events the same, make minor changes to ~25% of them, and major changes/replacements to ~25% of them. This policy has been in place for almost the entirety of SO for the purposes of ensuring ther...

Re: Replaying Events for 2021

I am overall in favor of changing the rules just because things will get boring, and top building events will be hard to differentiate. But, there is one aspect of this that I find appealing. This will let teams show their true potential based on the amount of time they put in, and not based on tal...

Re: Replaying Events for 2021

I vehemently oppose this, and I honestly think that a decision like this could kill Science Olympiad as an organization. Many of my arguments have already been voiced. I can really only think of one argument in favor of this: some schools may have funding problems, and a move like this would help th...

Re: Ohio 2020

I am a senior in high school. I'm a captain this year, and I wanted to see our team perform well at states. I am very disappointed - but I fully support this decision. Cancelling mass gatherings will help us to "delay the peak" and prepare our healthcare system for the worst to come. Publi...

Re: Covid-19 and Nats/States

I'm an Ohio senior, so no states for me. But cancelling mass gatherings is one of the best things our country can do to defeat this virus. I am disappointed that states was cancelled - but public health is the first priority.

Re: Covid-19 and Nats/States

Thank you for keeping track of the latest developments. As a senior, I'm obviously extremely disappointed - it looks like every competitive extracurricular I am in (FIRST, SciOly, and possibly Quizbowl) are beginning to cancel events due to something completely out of anyone's control. But I fully u...

Re: Detector Building C

Just wrapped up participating in this event at Solon, where the national event supervisor was present. The supervisor said that the intent of the event was not to have students curve-fit the Steinhart-hart equation but to derive their own equation. Apparently a rules clarification will be sent out. ...

Re: Detector Building C

The top-down photograph requires "labels identifying all components and detailing their functions". For anyone who has done this event (or an ES) does that mean I need to label every resistor, every wire, and all of the pins on the Arduino I am using?

Re: Science Olympiad Events 2019-2020

Fermi leaving decreases my hype for next year by 90%. Nothing can remotely be compared to that event in terms of fun.
