Re: Wright Stuff C

So, how did you do at state? Coach Chuck We got 12th with 2:12 in a 24 ft gym. Not great, but the new batch of rubber kinda messed us up a little. However, I will admit that I should've sent up my second flight with more torque since it doesn't really matter if it hit ceiling and break anymore and ...

Re: Wright Stuff C

We ran out of old batch and started new one the day before state competition. It was felt thinner and confirmed by measuring width and weight. Luckily, we had a prop with 5 degree less in the pitch. Just put on and we got back to the old timing. No time to do optimization. It is better to plan ahea...

Re: Wright Stuff C

Just like in the beginning, you Neff to read the flight and the rubber. How was the climb? The cruise? The let down? A quick read is the number of turns remaining, assuming you got to altitude. If too many remaining, rubber is too thin, reduce pitch. If it runs out, rubber is too thick, increase pi...

Re: Wright Stuff C

There are definitely variations batch to batch of the rubber. While ffm cuts the rubber to width, what is important is the Kinnear density, or grams per inch. Even if this is the same, the date code of the rubber can present differences, though the tam super sport rubber is more consistent than pri...

Re: Wright Stuff C

The 8 minute timer starts at the launch of any flight, trim or official. The single bonus applies to all flights. So one clock to beat for the bonus. But, once you launch that first flight, you are in 8 minute window to launch both official flights. Miss the 3-minute window and you have no bonus fo...

Re: Wright Stuff C

Michigan flying events are always highly competitive. I don't know down to 8th place. It will be interesting to see how the competition goes this year. Good luck, and don't give up on improving! Competition leads to advances, not settling for 8th place! Most importantly, be sure to study your log b...

Re: Increasing Flight Times

If your 21 winds is 21 turns of the rubber, this is probably too few. If it is 21 turns of the crank, then it is either 210 or 315 (10:1 or 15:1 winder) turns of the rubber, and probably about right. In general, some have claimed that the number of remaining turns should be about the same as the nu...

Re: Increasing Flight Times

Your video did not show the initial part of your flight, the part that you are most concerned about. There are three primary phases of the flight: 1. Initial climb (first lap or two), driven by launch torque 2. Late climb and cruise, usually less than a foot per lap, driven by rubber width vs. prop...

Re: Increasing Flight Times

I want to thank everyone again for your help so far, over the weekend, I was able to break our record and make a flight at 2:40. (See video below). As you can see in the video, my plane bumped the ceiling several times causing it to lose altitude. I am wondering if anyone knows how I can decease the...

Re: Score Discussion

Anyone have a score prediction for state's competition at Michigan? What will it take to medal? (Top 8). This is my first year doing MV so I'm not really sure how the score for MV will look. I've been hitting 20-60 points during practice depending on the distances. expect top 3 sub 20. We won first...

Re: Braking System

I do not recommend using a dowel because it is wood and it will wear and shrink and/or expand depending upon humidity/temp. Better to use metal, like an aluminum strip. That strip can be drilled with holes and in one of those holes you can insert a stopper, like a round spacer (again aluminum is a ...

Re: Braking System

You don't need to saw off one side of the wing nut. When it flips over you just need something to stop it on the way back from its starting point. Think of it this way ... 8 meters forward and between 1 and 6 meters back depending upon Regional, State, or National Rules. You can just vary your star...
